Ahoy-hoy.
I realize I've been AWOL for awhile. Tragically Taiwanese summer is just too bloody hot to hoop in earnest when your apartment isn't fitted with AC. But now it's October and finally cool enough to seriously get my practice on.
I'm pretty stoked. Two weekend's ago was Taiwan "Peacefest" (closest thing to a North American music festival you'll find in this country). I went and taught hoopdance workshops in the mountains the entire weekend. It was a blast. This Sunday I just got back from "Earthfest" (a psytrance party in the jungle) where I tried fire hooping for the first time. "Tried" turned into a 3 hour jam sesh. I'm HOOKED! Totally ordering a fire hoop today.

But I digress. I was hoping to get some help (or a tutorial link?) from knowledgeable hoopers on a move that's been eluding me for awhile. I'm not sure what it's called but it's basically a shimmy to the hands raised above the head... (when I've seen others perform the move they always start from the waist or knees--not sure if this is because it's necessary to properly execute the move or whether it just looks cooler.) I'm pretty competent at shimming from the knees to the chest, but it would add extra flair if I could get shimmy it over my head to start hand hooping.

I've tried to figure this one out for myself but have failed thus far. Love it if my hooping sistas (or brothas) could come to my aid.

Peace & Love,
Faye.

I discovered this move on accident haha. I was chest hooping with my hands in the air together in the prayer position and I shimmied it up to my hands. I've been practicing it but it's still not very pretty. it's the same motion as shimmying from any other part of the body except you're using your arms and you have to push A LOT harder in order for it to move up. Definitely try it with bare arms and shoulders. The hardest part is not to hit yourself in the face, you have to really push it up once you get to your chin so you can get your face out of the way. Hope that helps a little bit.
that would look so awesome if you started at your knees, shimmied up, up, up all the way to your hands in prayer!
I just discovered this too. You don't have to start from the waist, you can just start at the chest. As Yadida said, you really have to push hard with your arms to get the hoop up. It helps to move both your arms together in a circle instead of back and forth. It makes the movement smoother. Once it gets to right below my left elbow, I drop my elbow down and give it a push up to get it the rest of the way. Kind of like knocking your hoop back up to your hips with your knee. As with almost every hoop move, it is much easier while turning yourself in a circle.
