I love watching videos as I'm sure we all do, but I think a lot of my favorite dancers are the ones who incorporate really easy tricks into their dance as well as the more difficult ones. These tricks might not necessarily be more easy, but they're a lot less showy and don't have as much of a "wow!" factor. Regardless, they're spicy little ways to switch up the energy of the dance. I'd give examples but I wouldn't know what to call them, and therefore I don't know what to search for when looking for help! Or if videos/tutorials for tricks like these even exist because the moves seem so simple! I guess what it comes down to is creativity. Sure it's fun to just swing the hoop around your body from hand to hand, but what could I do instead?

For example: the jawn she's doing around 4:53... helicopter around the body? wtf? (oh btw, her LED hoop died like 2 minutes into her first dance so that why she's using a normal one :/ )

Yes, I love the complete freedom of motion this dancer has within her hoop. I wish I had some good tips for you...or could figure out some of that gal's wild off-body moves.
This is what I love to see! A hooper dancing like crazy instead of trick-trick-trick, which is great too, but just not *my* preference.

The move she is doing @ 4:53 and at various other points in her performance is just axis switching. From what I could tell, she is pulling it from behind her with her hand flipped backwards and then just flipping it around herself until it gets to a "portrait" view for isolations and other moves. It may be easier for me to break it down visually rather than in text, so if you would like, I could make a tutorial for that move. Just let me know! :)
Yes please, do do do!!!
Ok, so this move is about to drive me crazy. I can't get a good view of it but I'm going to try my damndest to work it out. Once I can get it, I post a video! :)
Thanks, Kristen, any & all tips will be welcome! I love experimenting with axis switches but still have trouble working them out from non-tute videos.
One 2-pickle Bloody Mary later, I figured it out! It is basically a one-handed helicopter that she is doing around her head rather than around the body, the problem was getting it from where ever (chest hooping, waist passing) she was hooping to that point. I'll get a video down this afternoon after my allergy tests :)
Cheers! Who knew that Bloody Marys were the key to hoop wisdom?

Okay, I can SORT of do a one-handed helicopter... this one may be a bit out of my league... but I eagerly await your vid! (Good luck with the allergy tests btw.)
I definitely agree, it's not all about the complexity of the tricks when it comes to a truly enjoyable & inspiring hoop video. I love the fancy stuff too, especially when a hooper seems to breathe mind-boggling tricks (Sharna Rose comes to mind) but the overall energy & flow is what keeps me glued to a video.
I love this video! She really just lets go and truly dances with the hoop instead of making the hoop dance with tricks. I really really love it. This should be our November hoop dance challenge is to hard core rock out with the hoop and avoid too many complex tricks. Adore it.
I agree, it is fun. I think that my goal for the rest of the month is stop pressuring myself to learn new tricks and just enjoy actually dancing ( not just working one trick for a minute and then running another one etc). Right now when I perform I feel like I am still thinking too hard and it shows. This is good inspiration.
I love the dance aspect of hooping! The video looked so professional, like she was actually having a good time, not just hyper focused on looking awesome.
yes I love just being free from thinking and just dancing with the hoop too! Its a much better sensation ya know!! I put up the November hoop challenge yesterday and I hope that this is where people are going to take it....just to let loose and go for it! The move she is doing in the video is exactly what you said the helicopter! She spins the hoop as its coming in front of her and then pulls it around the back of her.....sometimes she repeats this over really fast and sometimes she does it about one and a half times because she pauses the spin in the front for a dramatic effect! Shes dang good at that move! Thanks for sharin this video i love it! :)
