Hello!
I've never tried hooping before, and Youtube happens to be the mother of my interest, as no one I know hoops. (Which isn't surprising, I'm fairly young and live a boring life.) I've decided that I definitely want to try hooping! (My goal is to eventually make it to fire hooping! I'm so excited, although it may take years~)
So, here is my question:
How do I start hooping? The last time I picked up a hoop (and I mean a kid's one. You know, the five dollar things) was when I was a small little thing! Obviously, those things aren't real hoops. I really want to try to get into hooping, as it seems like it's really enjoyable! (And from what I've read, it is.) I don't have anyone to guide me other than the internet.
Thanks for your help! :)

Welcome! I'm not sure if you were looking to make a hoop, or suggestions on where to buy one, but here is an awesome tutorial for making hoops: http://www.jasonunbound.com/hoops.html
As for learning how to hoop, youtube is a great resource for tutorials. http://www.youtube.com/user/hoopsmiles and http://www.youtube.com/user/FireSandra are great channels to learn from. I've also heard wonderful things about Safire's classes here on hoopcity.
When I started I tried to waist hoop for a full song without dropping the hoop, then repeat hooping to the other side.
Hope that helps a bit!
It did help! Thank you! :)

If you don't want to make a hoop you can also buy one from sellers on Etsy and elsewhere. HoopMamas on Etsy makes all kinds of gorgeous hoops at great prices. They'll answer any questions about what kind/size hoop you should get if you message them or ask them when you buy your hoop. Then you can search for hooping tutorials on YouTube, or take classes here on HoopCity. (Sign up for SaFire's online classes—she's a great teacher.)
Permalink Reply by Mina Bear on April 15, 2012 at 6:29pm get a good hoop online somewhere, start with a large diameter hoop. The bigger the easier. I start hooping last summer, and I have already advanced to being a hoop performer at events like Dayglow and Fall Massive on the East Coast. I learned about 85% of my tricks through YouTube tutorials! they are great!
Permalink Reply by Carly Roseanne on April 15, 2012 at 10:10pm You just got to dive right in! Order a hoop off of etsy (I also really recommend hoopmamas, check out her ultra grip hoop http://www.etsy.com/listing/70331582/the-ultragrip-design-your-own-...)
Youtube is a really great place to learn. I've been hooping for just about 3 months now and have learned everything I know off of youtube. Babz Robinson does really great tutorials. I also recommend just watching people do there own thing everyday on youtube to see what you like and what you want to pursue.
The last thing I want to tell you is it's normal to get frustrated but don't expect to nail everything right away. Hooping is a process and there is always room for improvement whether you've been hooping 3 months or 3 years. I'm happy that you've decided to give it a whirl :)
Have fun!
