I had my first experience being filmed by strangers while hooping this weekend and I don’t know how I feel about it. I was at a convention and took a break to go outside and flow for a bit as relaxation. I kept having strangers walk up who didn’t engage me in conversation but they would whip out their cell phones, film for a while and then leave. I know hooping in a public space means I can’t control that from happening but it was really jarring to go from just messing around to feeling like I needed to perform because it was being captured on film.
Has this happened to anyone else. Does it change your hooping session? How do you feel about it?

Permalink Reply by Scunshine on June 5, 2012 at 7:39am oh one thing to remember if you see someone filming in a gym- it's private property so you have a right to tell management and they could end up kicking them out... might seem harsh but it's totally not cool to film people working out, why would dance practice be any different? You pay for a membership and that membership should involve some protection of your privacy.
Totally agree. I thought most gyms had rules about filming or photographs in them.
Permalink Reply by JJ Hula on June 5, 2012 at 1:54pm I was pretty upset at first...and a little creeped out, especially since as I walked out of the gym (right after it closed at night) he was outside..lol but he was just genuinely interested I guess. Wouldn't be the first time I've had a creepy guy interested in me because of my hooping though..
Permalink Reply by Alycia Betts on June 5, 2012 at 6:07pm I live in Jasper, AB and there's not many hoopers around here, everyone I hoop with I have taught.
Everyday in the park that I have my hooop i'm constantly getting tourists taking videos, or pictures of me.. It would be very nice if they would take the time to talk to you or engage in conversation, and exchange an email adress, or number so maybe you'd be able to see these pictures or videos. But it never happens.
I don't know at all how I feel about it, still. I should feel good about it, but sometimes it just makes me angry, once you notice someone with a camera, that's alll you're focused on until they leave.
I know how you feel. It is flattering that they are interested but as soon as I notice them filming it interrupts my process. I find myself running through a series of tricks I know I can nail because that is what they to capture. Also how embarrassing would it be to have a video crop up that is you dropping over and over again because they decided to film a trick you were trying to learn.
Permalink Reply by Frances Sparkle Davis on June 6, 2012 at 11:39am that sounds rough, especially since you weren't trying to perform, i know there is a big difference for me between hooping as a performance and hooping to get to that special personal space.
I hoop out a lot on the beach, because its an amazing place to hit my flow and really meditate within the hoop, but now that its summer the beaches here in soCal are really busy and i don't like being starred at while i'm practicing. So, I go a little earlier in the morning when there aren't as many people or on days its overcast .... monday afternoons are pretty quiet as well.
i dunno its hard to be mad at them for watching or video taping.... i mean what we do is pretty incredible and when someone is really in their flow its hard to look away.
i had one experience hooping by the swimming pool in my apartment complex... it was the weekend and some people were partying and drinking, they asked me if i would spin a few moves for them and of course i obliged them because, why not? I love to share my hooping! but once i started to hoop and did a few tricks they yelled some sort of aggressive things at me about how good my hips looked and how i couldn't possibly married, i must be singe etc... i really didn't like that. and my husband wasn't very comfortable with it either.
:::sigh::: its something i think all hoopers go through... this kind of dance really does attract attention, and its very sexy. But the sensual nature of the hoop is something that draws me to it. i try to embrace the energy i get from it as much as possible, but avoid situations where i feel uncomfortable. people that don't hoop don't know what its all about and may think you are performing or trying to just be sexy for the sake of sexiness.... but we know its so much more than that ;)
keep your head up and keep hooping!

I can relate.. when you're doing it for yourself and not for a performance, you don't want the papparazzi! I usually stop and hand them my card or if they seem friendly, ask them to send me the video too :)

I don't really care. But I'm a journalist (if you're in a public place the law is on the photographer's/videographer's side) and a really open person. I obsessively document things so I understand when other people feel the need to capture something foreign to them that they might like to share later. Depending on my mood I either ignore it and keep going or I play it up and rock out harder. :) I feel like it just sort of comes with the hooper territory, and I regularly search the web to see if I can find any footage or photos of myself out there. I hoop in public a lot and I haven't come across a single one so far, so apparently people are keeping the images for themselves.

Well, when I go hoop in public I go out with a different mindset than at home. I feel if I'm in public- then anybody could see/film/photography/whatever. I guess it's doesn't really bother me. Though one poster mention guy filming from his car...that would be creepy & I'd also have to go say something. All in all, when out like that I'm trying to have fun, I always have extra hoops so I have the hoops to try to get the "lookers" to give it a spin as well.
