Now that I have started hooping on a regular basis I figured I should start stretching. But I frequently forget to stretch. Growing up I was freakishly good at being flexible, my nick name in gym class was rubber band, and now I am not as flexible as I would like to be. I think that being flexible is a big part of hooping . But I just cant seem to get myself to do it every day.!

I trick myself into stretching everyday. There's a cool ballet split stretch routine that really helps the legs, and once I've done that I find myself in the mood to continue. It's all about tricking yourself into being in the mood to relax and stretch.

I hear ya. I teach hoopdance classes and I'm always telling my students about the importance of stretching (and we do the Hoopnotica stretches that correlate to whatever we're working on that day) but personally, I rarely stretch. So bad. I'm working on doing more of that. This week I actually spent like 10 minutes stretching before hooping. Was proud of myself. I feel like if I want to keep growing in my hoopdance though stretching and becoming more flexible is a necessity. I was like you though—freakishly flexible until about college when I became a potato. :)

I always tell a story from when I began hooping about how I was completely stiff and had an incredible pain on one side - I was not doing two things! I was not stretching and I was not hooping in my reverse! In my on hoop practice I do try to do a little stretching maybe not the amount of my classes but I try to do some each time I hoop!
Permalink Reply by Ashly Connor on December 18, 2011 at 5:39pm You just have to make it a part of your routine when you do your practice. Once you get in the habit it's easy to stick with it. Flexibility not only helps your ability to do cool things like lift your legs over your head, but the core muscular strength that comes with it dramatically increases your control and precision in hooping technique :)
Permalink Reply by Cat Rose Piper on December 19, 2011 at 10:04am you learn something new everyday! I had no idea. I am going to the gym tonight and I am going to make sure I stretch for at least 20 mins
Permalink Reply by Sally Ann on August 2, 2012 at 8:56am I used to be very flexible too and than I ran track in high school and a lot of the ability went away. I agree with flexibility being a big part of hooping. I randomly stretch throughout the day whenever I feel like it, even the slightest bit of stretching helps I believe! Usually an hour before bed is my favorite time when I am just relaxing :)
