I've been making hoops lately and I had a few questions for those of you who make a lot of hoops. What are the best kinds of tape to buy to make hoops to potentially sell? I'm willing to spend a pretty large sum of money to buy tape to get my collection started but I wanted to know what the best investment would be....such as vinyl tape? gaffer tape? glitter? prism? mirror? etc. Also, I experimented for the first time today with sparkle tape and it is a pain in the ass to do!! haha. Any tips? I've seen the one video on youtube about taping but I'm sure there are many helpful tapers in here that have some extra secrets. Thanks all!

I just have to say that I know Hoopnotica has been doing this a LONG time....longer than me at least and today i was looking on their site just to look. Now I know their travel hoops are outsourced from China, but the rest i'm fairly sure they make themselves....at least someone does....I know one of the guys that makes them for them out there.....either way.....They have what they call their "performance" hoops which are just hoops with no gaff only prismatic, sparkly, and mirror. you can tell that they only went around the hoop twice; HOWEVER, it looks SO PERFECTLY spaced. I've been making hoops for about a year and a half and have for sure gotten a TON better....almost perfect, except with those damn shiny tapes....i feel like i spend my whole time cutting the strip to make it easier to work with and i still have to do it repeatedly.....grrrrr for me, good for hoopnotica.
I just taped my first hoop with sparkle tape this morning. Yikes!!! I tried to be very careful, plan out my spacing and so on,but it was a disaster. I have tons of crinkles, bubbles, raised edges that catch and it makes crinkly sounds as I hoop. I watched tutorials prior and thought I followed them. Help!
That stuff is hard to handle & takes getting used to! While you're learning (& sometimes after especially if it's a big roll) it's very helpful to cut the tape into manageable lengths, so you don't have to juggle the loose roll. Make sure the overlapping parts are on the inside of the hoop so you can seal them with a "racing stripe" of gaffers.

Then the crucial part is pressing down the tape constantly as you apply it. You sort of stroke it down as you go with your opposite thumb, moving forward from the already-adhered part to the unstuck part. Make sure you are stroking it down all the way around the piping, not just on the part you can see easily. Go very slowly until you get the hang of it. Cut off the backing now & then as you go to get it out of your way. It helps to have a partner working with you until you get the hang of it.
If you mess up, rip back the bad part & cut it off. Don't try to reapply it-- it usually makes matters worse!!
