I've been making my own hoops for about a month now and tonight I'm going to attempt to make my first collapsible hoop.  My question is, do you decorate the hoop before making the cuts to insert the connectors? Or do you make the cuts first, put the hoop together, tape it and then cut the tape where the connectors are afterwards? I'll be using Jason's instructions but he doesn't mention anything about when in the process to apply the tape... Any help or tips for this are greatly appreciated!!

This is how I make mine.... I measure by circumference not diameter so you will have to adjust lol. My hoops are 12ft around (outside circumference) I start by cutting 2 6ft sections. Than I heat and insert both connectors to make the hoop. After that I personally will hoop with it for a bit while it's still warm (don't do this without a shirt on it's kinda hot lmao) This helps round out the connection points. After this I go through and tape the entire hoop like I would a standard hoop. Than I find the connection points and run a razor blade around so the hoop can collapse. If you are using decorative tape as opposed to just vinyl it will start to peel up and the edges where you just cut. I take a matching Gaffer and run a band around the hoop on either side of the joint to hold down the glitter tape or what ever I am using. This also makes it much easier to find the joints later when you are trying to collapse your hoop esp if you do it in the dark. Hope this helps good luck in you hoop making. (P.S. I have found that if you make the hoop with 3/4 inch 100PSI tubing the connectors can get really loose and your hoop will fly apart. There may be better connectors I haven't found yet but just keep this in mind)
Thanks I'll give it a shot!!!
What kind of connectors are you using? I've read about this a various places online and found that lasco brand connectors were best for figure 8 hoops. I have made a few with the 100psi give and the lasco connectors and haven't had a problem with them coming apart. The lasco connectors are slightly longer but they have little bumps in the center that you have to sand off before using them.
so what is the best tubing and connectors for the collapsible 8 hoop as it would fit so much better in the car!
3/4 inch 160 psi tubing is the best from my experience
That's my preferred tubing also... that's what I started hooping with back in '07 and I have tried many others only to come back to this one :)
i dont like the 160 psi since ive been hooping for a while. ive used the 120 3/4" and am going to be making some out of the 120 1/2" soon. i havent had problems with the 120 so far. i love my collapsible!!
edit: I didn't realize you had a bunch of replies already but if you still need help check with Kristin. She makes a lot of collapsible hoops.

I will take as many tips and suggestions as I can!! Thanks so much! :)
i am just starting to make 3/4" 160psi collapsible hoops.
The problem i am having is with the mirror tape. It crinkles near the connectors when i collapse it. It also has a bit of bubbleing action going on on the outside edge, opposite the connectors, when it is fully collapsed. Does anyone know how to keep this from happening? or is it inevitable?

thankyou in advance for any help you may be able to dispense.
The shiny tape will crinkle with infinity style hoop... Nothing you can really do to stop it.
I just tape mine in two different sections(not taping over the connectors), then mark the connectors with strips of vertical tape to cover the "loose ends" so I know where to fold the hoop. I think it gives it a nice clean look.
