Question- I plan on taking a hoop teaching certification course this coming spring and am wondering how the other teachers on this website do their classes. Do you do classes in the park or rent out a space? Or do you go to the local gyms (which in my city I think I have to be a certified group trainer as well and I'm working on that...) and see if they will allow you to teach? If so- what do you do for costs? I would like to work in colleges around the area and have "gigs" at like high schools and youth groups for churches and such as well as community classes and also if possible the YMCA or another fitness/dance center... It's kind of a lot to ask, but I'm just trying to get a full understanding of how teaching works for beginners. I have a Bachelors in Education and am pursuing a few other teaching/training related fields right now, but I don't know how to really begin my hoop teaching. I know I don't have all of the skills down pat yet, but I would like to know so that when I get there and have everything down and understand hooping more, I have a bit of a grasp on how to start a business/teaching. Liability and taxes also scare me so has anyone used a financial advisor or something like that? or ... It's confusing to me. Any information would be so much appreciated!! Thank you!!

I teach through my local community center/parks and rec programs. They're fantastic! The YMCA is another great option. Women's gyms like Curves or pole dance fitness studios can be good places to try. Also, gyms aren't as strict when it comes to something like teaching hooping as they are with a personal trainer or yoga instructor, because dance is a different type of movement. If you are going to teach in gyms I'd definitely try to get certified in teaching hoopdance (just to show 'em you're serious and do have some training) and I'd also make sure to pick up some fitness instructors' insurance (mine's through K&K).

HI! I just begun teaching and I started a meetup group so I can get the feel of teaching. Once a week I teach in the park for an hour. As a beginning teacher, I really love being able to do a low key thing but also every week is a new lesson from me in being able to add something new to my teaching skills, but also being able to manage different levels so everyone gets something out of it. The class is always easier when everyone is a at the same level, but it is not the case most of the time! So 5 weeks into it!
I am also new to the town I live in so just starting to scope out rental spaces for classes when I feel like I am ready! Going to get my CPR license next week. And signing up for yearly insurance today. Also coincidentally through K and K which is $189.00 for the year.
I am a graphic designer by day, so this is just a small extra source of income for now for me. But I have kept track of all of my expenses. Which are classes or trainings, insurance, training DVD's, supplies such as tapes and hoops and the of course, how much money I bring in. Which against trainings and such, still haven't broken even... But it has only been 5 weeks and I still have the teacher training wheels on!
So there you have it from a beginning beginner!
Let me know how you are doing or if you want to check in on my latest progress as you are not far behind me!
