I've been practicing and practicing and practicing the back lift up (into lasso) and can do it ok while standing still, but as soon as I try to do it while turning I get a caught up in the hoop (most of the time). The hoop just hangs flat behind me. Am I needing to turn faster to keep up momentum so the hoop stays horizontal? I notice if I try to turn faster I mess up the hoop.

Anybody else find it easier to do while standing still? I know to lift up, not out, but what the heck is going on when I start turning???? Any suggestions? I feel like I've spent so much time on this one "trick" that I should be a whiz at it by now.

In the beginning I found it easier to do it standing still too! You'll get the feel of it soon enough. It really is all about getting the feeling of the flow of the hoop and trying to match it. It does sound like you need to spin a bit faster to match the hoop speed as you lift your arm straight up, or try slowing down your lift/hoop speed to match your spinning speed. You'll get it!
I agree with Lisa that it's just a matter of time before your body catches on. It's kind of hard to put the formula into words, but it has to do with the momentum of the hoop-- when you are still it really has to whip around you so it stays level, but when you turn, it can get a little wonky from the slower motion. If you think about the centrifugal force involved it might help. I remember really noticing this when I started learning it in reverse current-- but it's hard for me to describe exactly what you have to do. I just remember thinking "centrifugal force!" The good news is that once you do catch on, turning gives you a lot more time & flow!
I found that paying attention to the position of my elbow as I was lifting up the hoop really helped keep me from getting tangled as I was turning. I used to get caught all the time, but as soon I started thinking about keeping the elbow of my lifting arm pointing at the sky my vortex/lasso became soo much easier.

Good luck!
As silly a suggestion as it might sound...check the direction that you are turning. Make sure you're turning your body in the direction that the hoop is spinning. I was teaching a friend the other day and she was having a similar issue with getting tangled in her arms when trying to turn. It's still possible to do it while turning either direction but when you turn with it, it should make it a little easier to get the hoop up..at least it does for me..i feel like I have a split second longer.
The only thing I can think to add is to make sure you are turning and lifting the hoop up at the exact same time. If you are lifting and then turning (even if it's off by a second or two) I think it throws off the whole trick. That was how I eventually got it anyway :) Hope it helps!
are you turning the right way lol?? trust me tho...soon you'll get it and it'll be so natural feeling...
Thanks for all the good suggestions!! I will keep all of this in mind when I'm practicing next time.
