Hello Hoopers!

Hoop City has a great collection of hoop videos in the gallery and it's always exciting to see a great new hooping video. The City has a limited amount of space for content before we'll have to purchase more monthly server space. To save space citizens have been embedding videos from their YouTube accounts and it has been a HUGE help. Also remember, quality is definitely more important than quantity! It might be hard to choose, but if you record every hoop session you have it may be best to select the best of your best and post just those ones. This will make it easier for viewers to comment on your videos and for you to easily look back on your progress. Keep your audience engaged by showing them the best that you've got!

Also consider the following tips when recording to get a great video:

- Use appropriate lighting. Even pitch black isn't best for LED or Fire because then you can't see the hooper's body and the dancing and move become less visible. Low light is best for LED and Fire videos while daytime prop hoops are great in brighter light.
- You can use the sun or a light source to create stunning silhouettes or eye-catching shadows.
- Use a tripod or suggest your friend to hold the camera still and lock their elbows to the front of their torso for extra support. This seriously helps a lot!
- Tell who ever is recording to NEVER turn the video camera sideways! No really, this will result in useless black sides in the final video. Turning a camera sideways is fine for still photographs but with video it ends up squishing the video smaller instead of showing more. Make sure to tell everyone this when passing them your camera. It's easy to end up with unusable footage of a great performance because the camera person wasn't aware of final video editing.

How do I add a video to the gallery or embed one into a message?

You can also e-mail a video to upload it. When you joined the community a unique email address is assigned to your profile. You can use this email address to send photos and videos in one at a time to your profile. If your cell phone has a video camera and email, this is a great way to add camera phone videos to your profile on the go!

When you go to the Add Photos page you'll see an option that looks like this:

Click "More Information" and you'll be shown your person e-mail address for our community the instructions on how to email your photos right to the gallery!

also a video converter site is helpful. such as imtoo.com they have software just for this purpose. my bf taught me how to do this. it was a big help for converting video files that were too large.
I tried uploading a video last night, but it doesn't play when I click on it.
Yes, I've been trying to upload unsuccessfully also. I think something changed with Sandra put up the new front page. That's when everything went wonky. I was right in the middle of embedding when she started and I got one to work and then they just quit.

I'm reluctant to use YouTube for a number of reasons, so I've been uploading directly to HC.  Now that I'm aware of the bandwidth situation, I want to change that.

Any recommendations for a user-friendly, relatively ad-free video hosting site?  I have a Vimeo account but haven't uploaded there yet, and I"m also looking at Photobucket's TinyPic service.  Does anyone have any feedback about either of them or a recommendation for another service?  Thanks.

My only issue when trying to upload a video is that my file is a little big - they are 102.3MB and about 121MB.  Both videos were taken with Photo Booth on my Mac, and both are under 4 minutes.  Is there some way that I can downsize them so that they can fit the zise requirements?

I tried uploading to Vimeo and embedding here, but it took too long for my impatient self, so I finally caved and started using YouTube.  You can upload videos of up to 2GB and 15 minutes there, and then copy the embed code and paste it here.  That's what I'm doing now.

If you do that, make sure the "Use Old Embed Code" option is checked on You Tube; it works better with HC's embedding.  Hope it works for you!

I tried uploading it to Youtube, but the time estimate was 12 hours!  I even waited a while to see if it was just overestimating, but after a half hour of waiting the upload was still only at 1%

Wow - what kind of Internet connection are you using?  If it's dial-up or DSL, that may be part of the problem, although the file size doesn't help.

Is there any way you can compress the file or convert it to a different format?  That might reduce the size.

The only other option I can think of is to edit it down and remove any extra effects or transitions you might have put in it.  I try to keep my videos at 6 minutes or less, and they usually end up being around 30-40 MB.  Even those take anywhere from 10 minutes to half an hour to upload on a cable connection, depending on traffic.

I hope you are able to come up with a solution.  I know how frustrating it can be when you really want to share a video and YouTube isn't cooperating.

I have cable internet connected through wireless router.

I don't know how to convert it or compress it so that it's a smaller file.  Any tips?

I'm not very familiar with Mac programs and capabilities.  Wish I could help.  I don't understand why a video that's only 4 minutes long would be that big; Windows format videos (at least, the ones I've made), are smaller by about a third even when they're a little longer than yours.

Calling all Mac users: Is there anyone here who can help Deanna?

looks like I fixed it!

This webpage was helpful.  I ended up opening the video in quicktime, and then going File > Save for Web... and then chose for Computer.  And now it's uploading to Youtube just fine.  :)

Ok... new issue... I can't add my video to my videos... I go to the page to embed it from Youtube, but when I go to add it, it says it can't find a video associated with the page.  This is the page: http://youtu.be/ujTATJqzt-c

I have it set to that it can embed to other webpages, and the vid is public... so I don't know why it's not working.
