Hi I really enjoy traveling and love to bring my hoop.
I have a Hoopnotica travel hoop but it is noisy and tears apart my thumbnail every time I take it apart. It is also a bit heavy. I also have a Betty Hoops travel hoops, but the push button segments are hard to take apart and this hoop is really heavy and good for a fitness jam for me.
There are some others out there, like 3-6 segments push button in different types of tubing including polypro as well the bungee style.
Any one of you lovely ladies have any experience with either of these styles or a certain hoop shop's travel hoop that you would ecstatically recommend?
I am looking for that elusive quality and quiet, light and grippy hoop! Hahaha!

I would recommend an "infinity" style hoop, like these:

Seconded. Infinity style hoops might be hard to close/open if you're not used to it, but there are no screws or push buttons to try and deal with.
Every hoop I've gotten from Hoop Mamas has also been fantastic quality. Use the coupon code "HOOPLOVE" for 10% off.
edit: Here's a picture of the minis I just received not too long ago. It helps to see actual photos and not just the stock ones. :P

Permalink Reply by Cait on September 19, 2012 at 8:03am I also have a hoopnotica, and I have a couple of the infinity-style hoops. For some of the same reasons you gave (weight, noise), I had hoped that the infinity style hoops would be just as easy to travel with. I use public transportation a lot, and I cart a hoop back and forth to work pretty regularly. Unfortunately, the infinity ones are still round when they're folded, so they don't fit in a bag like the hoopnotica. It's a bit of a bummer.
Sweet Shoppe Hoops makes a push-button version that is longer, but looks like it might travel ok. I have one of their infinity types and I really love it. So maybe give one of those a try?
I love my infinity style hoop! I purchase from Hoop Mama on Etsy but I think each person has their own preferred vendor.
I HATE my Hoopnatica travel hoop. I paid approximately a billion dollars and I feel like it is a piece of sh*t.
As a side note I travel with my infinity hoop frequently. In a car or van it doesn’t take any room you can slide it between seats or on top of luggage. On a plane I loop it over my backpack and it counts with the pack as a single carry on. It fits in the overhead on most large planes and if you are flying turbo prop you can usually ask the attendant to put it in the coat closet at the front of the plane.

Thanks ladies for your opinions! Super helpful. Thanks for for the coupon Ashley! It is funny because I've recommended Hoop Mamas myself for a few people just recently (saw the hoops but didn't ask about the coil down which I am curious about), but haven't bought myself yet because I haven't needed anything... yet... so now... I am going to give the infinity style a try. Maybe when I have a bit more money give the Sweet Shoppe push button a try.
This is cool because now I can make a decision without having to worry about whether I am throwing money out the door.

This thread is super helpful to me since I'm looking for a travel hoop too. Thanks for posting the question. I was wondering--with the Sweet Shoppe push button version, the seller says you can add a segment (or in some cases remove one) for a two in one hoop. Has anyone had experience with this? Does it actually work?
This would be awesome as I don't have much room for a massive hoop collection, but I'm not sure if the curvature of each segment of the hoop would change enough at the smaller or larger diameter.

Since I am recently sizing down a bit, I broke down and bought one infinty from Hoop Mamas WITH a 10% coupon and one 6 segment push button travel from Sweet Shoppe. So if you wanna wait a few I will let you know the scoop on how long it took to get to my waist and what the pros and cons are - if any! I hope they are both good. It looks like everyone already loves the infinity from Hoop Mamas so that one is probably a given.

I really appreciate it. Hopefully both of them work out for you. I imagine it will be convenient to have both styles of hoop too.

Now one of the hardest things... to wait!
I will be in touch and let you know!

Hi Em,
So I just received the 2 hoops I ordered at the same time last friday. I've been playing with them a bit and thinking of the pros and cons. If you want another update in a week or so as well in case anything has changed let me know, but soooo far this is what I have:
Hoops Mamas infinity:
pros:
well taped, quality tape used
Shipped with clear instructions on how to open and close it.
I opened it fairly easy although I was a little nervous.
wonderfully quiet and sturdy
Great great price.
Pro and con: took a few days longer to make but shipped faster than Sweet Shoppe.
cons:
more of a notation than a con at this point because I have really broken it down yet and it really isn't a big deal. But when I opened it from its coiled down shipped state it took a bit of pushing and pulling to get it perfectly round.
They recommend you don't really coil it down that often. Although Scully has had wonderful luck and travel quite a bit and coiled hers down and has no problem. I will be playing with coiling it down and opening it back up this coming week.
the coils are small enough to throw in a big backpack or suitcase, but to me it is a bit easier to throw in the 6 pices of a regular travel hoop. But again that is not a con just a preference.
I love this hoop and for the price and the quiet travel hoop factor I consider it a great purchase.
This is the one I ordered at an awesome price:

Sweet Shoppe 6 segment travel hoop
http://www.etsy.com/listing/99159074/2-hoops-in-1-travel-hula-hoop-....
Pros:
2 hoops in one! Great for learning tricks with the ability to have 40" and 36" and perfect 100 psi weight.
quality taped used and great tape job.
the six segments to me are easier to throw in a suitcase or a back pack then the coiled hoop (but again this is just preference)
pro and con: was made fast and shipped out quick but shipping took longer as they used parcel post as opposed to priority mail from hoop mamas.
Cons:
It is slightly noisy. Not anywhere near that relentless loud creaking from the hoopnotica travel hoop, but it is there.
Not sure how sturdy it is. The push button system seems less sturdy that the hoopnotica travel connectors. But really it is too early to tell, but the fact that I show concern over is is enough to make me mention it in the cons.
Concerns about sturdiness over a hoop with a $50 plus shipping price tag is a con in my book.
So there you have it so far.
I will be traveling to Denver in a few weeks as well as in Nov and Dec, and I will most likely take both and see which one I prefer over the next few months and how they hold up. I am really hoping both of them do! And maybe I will just always like both for different reasons! Which will probably be the case if they both hold up with their quality after traveling consistently with them!
Let me know what you decide and how you fare Em!
