I have done a decent bit of research and understand how to make the hoop, but am confused regarding all of the different specifications concerning weight, size, diameter, etc.
I understand that the typical adult beginners hoop is made of 1''-3/4'' poly tubing, 100-160 psi, and roughly 40'' in diameter, give or take a few inches. I would go ahead and make a 40'' hoop out of 3/4'' 160 psi tubing, but I've also read that my height and weight should be taken into consideration. I am not really the "average" sized adult.
I've measured up to my bellybutton and it's 38''. I'm 5'3.5'' in height, about 105lbs with a 25'' waist. Is my size atypical enough that I would benefit from a small/lighter hoop than the standard adult beginners hoop? But then again I don't want it to be so light that I have a hard time keeping the hoop up, correct? The information I've gathered varies enough that I'm feeling a little unsure, so I am hoping those of you with experience can help me out on this one. I'm very excited to make my first hoop and try this out! Thanks in advance!

I like the mathematical approach! haha... 1.1x your waist in inches for a fast hoop, 1.2x for a medium speed hoop, and 1.3x for a slow hoop. If you're a beginner I'd go for slow. so 25" x 1.3=32.5"
If you were over 5'7" I'd recommend a larger size than the measurement, but because you're average height I think a 32" or 34" would work. A 40" would be overkill

Permalink Reply by LiviJoyHoops on June 26, 2012 at 5:30pm Here's something else to add. You might be considerably happy with a 3/4" 100psi PE tubing, cut to the size you think is best. This is just enough to feel like you are geting a workout. I would not even bother with the 160 psi. It is much heavier! You could eventually incorporate the 1/2" 125 psi as you get more tricks down.

That's really what I was concerned about...the 160 psi being too cumbersome for my size, but also not wanting to go so light that I will have a hard time learning. I am now leaning towards the 100 psi I think. I don't think I'll have too difficult of a time picking it up. Or I hope not, haha.

I agree with going with 100psi and making a few different hoops out of the roll of tubing. You can always add extra tape to make it heavier, but 160 psi can be kind of painful.

I started with 160 3/4. I'm your height but I'm 118lbs. Personally if you aren't trying to spend a bunch of money to start out I would go with the 3/4 100psi. After about three months of using the 160 I was ready to try more tricks that require quicker moves and put more pressure on the hands. So the 160 was too heavy for that so I had to go make smaller ones. However, I did eventually sale all my heavier ones so I got my money back on all that investment. I think you will catch on just fine with 100psi. So just experiment with different sizes hoops as well. The belly button rule worked for me then went smaller to go fast or a little larger for more of a work out! Have fun and enjoy the journey!

I use 1/2'', 125 psi polyflex tubing when I made my first homemade hoops. I made a set of minis, and a 36''. The "rule" for the right size hoop for each individual...is...the hoop should measure from the ground up to your bellybutton in diameter. I will warn you now....that after a significant amount of practice...you will keep wanting a smaller and smaller hoop as you get more advanced. Atleast thats what happened to me :) I now comfortably use a 30'' polypro. But i do love my polyflex...no doubt. If you want to be challenged though...i reccommend going smaller than you think. It will be so rewarding in the end. Dont know if this helped any! But happy hooping and good luck!!!
