Ok so I am working on vertical chest hooping and I am really struggling with it. I can chest hoop well with arms both in and out but as soon as I try to turn vertical, the hoop either falls down my back or moves up and smacks me in the face. I can chest hoop vertically with no arms fairly well, but the arms really pose a problem for me. Anyone have any suggestions?

When chest hooping horizontally with arms in, you need to make larger forward-back pushes to compensate for your arms. The same holds true for vertical. Which means strong thighs, lower back and a fair bit of flexibility.

Instead of trying to sustain vertical chest hooping for a long time, why not start out using it as a short transition to another move? You will slowly build up to being able to sustain the movement for longer, until reach any duration you like.

that makes a lot of sense. i'm starting to get the hang of it as i practice more but the transition thing is a great idea thank you for that! thank you for your help :)

I like to jump into my vertical chest hooping.  I think it gives you a little more momentum and that might help the hoop to stay on your chest.  I actually like it when the hoop travels up to my neck so that I can get it going on my neck for a minute and that way I can grap it, have it going on my hand for a second, and then throw it back into vertical chest hooping. Sorry if that is a lengthy explanation and makes no sense, sometimes it's easier to show how to do certain tricks. I would look up some videos on YouTube and figure it out that way.

Hope this helps!

this makes plenty of sense! i've watched a few youtube tutorials but none of them have really addressed the problem that i'm experiencing. i'm starting to get the hang of it more as i practice though and "jumping" into it helps, moving from the knees instead of the waist. thank you for your help! :)

Yeah I'm spending a lot of time practicing just ducking my arms in and out while chest hooping vertically. I spin in the hoop and just play around. I'm noticing I can keep my arms in longer and longer every day.

I also spent a lot of time standing still and shoulder hooping because I couldn't keep it going very long unless I was spinning in circle.

That helped too.

Good luck!

For me, what helped was to emphasize the bending at the knees.
