On Windows, Windows Movie Maker is decent- has basic editing.

iMovie on Macs is pretty good- that's what I started with years ago. Again, still basic though.

Final Cut Pro- available on Macs only, is an expensive software I have been lucky to make a few films with but is *the* best, IMO. You can make truly professional films with it.

I generally have been using WMM for the past couple years to make all my videos for my Youtube channel if you want to see what it's basic capabilities are.

I absolutely love iMovie on the mac. It is soooo easy and generally advanced enough for anything I want to do. I learned how to use it in no time.
