Any hoopers out there going to Wakarusa? My boyfriend and I are changing things up (we typically go to Bonnaroo every year) and going to Waka this year. It's our first trip and we're really excited! I would love any advice or info about this festival's experience!

Of course, I want to meet as many hoopers as possible while we're there! I was looking at the event's pictures last night and I saw about 50 pictures of hoopers...so I know it's a friendly community :)

Im headed down for Waka this year. I havent been to Mulberry Mountain before, but I have heard amazing things about it and hopefully it will be a nice change for you from camping on the face of the sun for Bonnaroo. The lineup looks awesome, and I'm so excited to try something new. I havent been to a festie outside of the Midwest before, so it will be an adventure to say the least! You will have no problem finding hoopers... it's a festival after all! I havent been to bonnaroo so I cant really say what the crowd is like there, but it seems like it attracts all kinds of people, not just the hippie types that would more likely be into hooping. All the festivals I seem to go to are really dirty hippie type fests, so there's hoopers everywhere, along with poi and staff... and the fire always comes out at night! I cant say that will for sure happen at Wakarusa, but with the lack of big midwestern festies this year (except summercamp) I know a lot of people from my area will be making the long drive in order to get their early festival raging in.
Wakarusa used be to held in Lawrence, KS at Clinton Lake for 5 years and then moved to Arkansas last year. It's a wonderful festival, many of my closest friends I've met through the years have been at Waka. Very close-knit family. This year, the electronic stage lineup is set to be outrageous--so there will definitely be hoopers jamming during the afternoon sets and busting out the LEDs for the late night sets :) There are generally hoop workshops as well. Mulberry Mountain is a beautiful place, hope you enjoy, hope I see you!
i'm going! we always go to that venue when its mulberry moutain harvest fest so i'm excited to see what a bigger fest will bring! we are from the town bonnaroo is in and we were pretty bummed about lineup and prices this year! hopefully i'll run into some hoopers at waka! we got mainstage camping!
My husband and I are buying our tickets this weekend! We're bringing lots of hoops and OUR KIDS! This is our first big festival with the WHOLE family so we're super excited. Hope to see you all there!
Never been so I have nothing to add about the festie itself. However, my absolute favorite band (I've followed them from Boston to Burlington, to Philly, Baltimore, and even DC this past weekend) is playing. Be sure to check out State Radio .
If anyone is looking for a way to go for free and you dont mind workind 4 hours a day for it, this is what i'm doing. They're still looking for drivers... http://www.facebook.com/#!/profile.php?v=info&ref=nf&id=100000613734422
I live in Arkansas and i went to Wakarusa last year! First of all, Mulberry Mountain is gorgeous!!! the vibes and energy on those campgrounds are magical! i didnt meet one person i didnt like. everyone was so friendly and i really felt connected to everyone. its very hooper friendly also. its smaller than bonnaroo but i like that because it feels more personal especially when it comes to the music. great choice for a festival!!! let me know if you need any more info!!
I am going this year! I am so excited. I went to Waka in '06 back in KS and had a great time, except for the police presence there. I think that was one of the reasons they moved venues? Not sure, but I still had a good time regardless. I'm a little nervous about driving through Arkansas, last time I was there I was pulled over for going 5 mph over the speed limit and they searched my entire car because the police dog sat down by my car which was the signal for drugs and there was NOTHING to be found in my car of that sort. I did however have dreadlocks at the time, so I believe I was profiled. So don't speed in that state especially!!

Look forward to finding all the hoopers there!
Waka '07 and '08 were much more calm after the police storm of '06. Sad that it happened, and yes, that is one of the reasons it moved. The contract was becoming impossible for the promoters and organizers, the Kansas State Parks were threatening to fine lots of money for every minute the shows went over their curfew for the night. (Les Claypool '07, anyone? Sadness...) Plus, the security that was being provided for free to a country music festival in a nearby city was refusing to provide the same service to Waka b/c they profiled it for being a "hippie fest". The festie is so dear to my heart and was so very sad when it moved, but Mulberry Mountain is a blessing, a beautiful place to carry on the festival!
I went last year and had such a blast that I'm going again this year. The crowd and feel of the entire festival was amazing, everyone was being friendly and having a good time. There's plenty of space to hoop in all the tents and especially by the main stage! Hope to see you there!
I and the other Hooper Troopers from Memphis are going!! Looks like there will be lots of new faces to see from here :-)

I've been to Mulberry Mtn. the past 2 years and have loved it.
Looking forward to Umphrey's McGee... Mark Farina (please get a late night slot!).. Railroad Earth..Robert Randolph.. The Disco Biscuits.. oh it's going to be so much fun!!!

And I hear the fire group/merry pranksters will be in attendance.. they put on some neat late night entertainment with a fun little band :)

See you ladies in the Ozarks \0/
i'll definitely be going. haven't been to wakarusa before, but the lineup is great! mulberry mountain is beautiful too, i'm really excited!
