Hey All!  I have been using a water hoop lately as opposed to my HDPE.  I want to transition to fire hoop and I figured it would be good to practice on the water-filled hoop to get used to added weight.  I'm finding that it is difficult to do some tricks that I thought I had mastered.  The added load makes my planes a little sluggish and I find it hard to keep it perfectly aligned when horizontal.

...This got me to wondering if other hoopers had any opinions/feedback on the differences between water and air.  One positive of my water-play is that certain moves and sequences look absolutely graceful, more so than I have yet achieved with my 'regular' hoop.  I've also found that the water makes my practices really intimate and meditative.  What do you all think?

Water based hoops are more for a personal experience and exercise. and meditation hoop dance. but i dont think the water weighted hoop will help you get used to weight of a fire hoop considering a fire hoop isnt nearly as heavy as a water hoop. The water hoop will also spin unevenly as a fire hoop wont be as different. the difference is the wind resistance from the spines not so much the weight.

Hope this helps a little :)

Water may be to heavy for fire. I think it would be best to get used to it without water. It changed the momentum of the hoop but it could also be beautiful. I guess you could try it? I never really thought about it. I just wouldn't like the lack of control over the momentum as the water gives it its own momentum. If that makes any sense at all?

Your heavier water-filled hoop will help you build muscle and wrist strength which will do you good when it comes to controlling lighter hoops and your fire hoop. As you build strength, your planes will flatten out and the tricks will happen again they way they do with the lighter hoop.

As you are discovering, there are differences in hooping style with light and heavy hoops. Nothing wrong with grace and meditation.

When you get your fire hoop, you'll find there are considerations and challenges you haven't thought about yet (like keeping the spines off the ground or not setting your hair on fire!). Such fun to always have something new to learn.

the added weight from the water will definitely help your strength as Tink said,  but I wouldn't recommend it as your sole practice hoop when you're moving into fire. the water's movement in the hoop makes it a lot different than any hoop that's empty. I'd suggest getting an empty hoop that's comparable to your fire hoop's weight (when it has fuel on it), and using that to practice.

Fire hoops aren't that heavy... well, they can be, but they aren't necessarily heavy. I got the Quick Wicks from Synergy Fire hoops, so I can swap them around between different hoops. presently it's on a heavy one. My friend Tera has a hoop, I think from Sacred Flames, but I could be wrong, and her's is pretty much the same weight as my super light poly pro. One down side I've thought was with the water hoops is the whole, dynamic of how the water moves is slightly different from a balanced hoop... but I've not worked with one, so I could be completely and totally off. I think maybe using just a generally heavy hoop would help a little more efficiently.
