what do you do when you are having trouble mastering a trick?

i often get frustrated when i am unable to master a hoop trick, for example i have been trying to learn the duck out shoulder trick for weeks and still have yet to master it. what do you other hoopers do as an outlet when you cant master a trick right away?

For starters, I laugh, and I laugh A LOT! When I get really frustrated I sit back and think about how I know I am going to eventually get it and I just need to laugh about how silly I am, and trust me, I have to do this a lot!
I also go slow, very slow, and break down any piece that I think could be messing me up. Often times I need to walk away and take a break and come back to it later, and many times when I come back to it, I get it right away.
I hope this helps!
It took me what seemed like forever to learn shoulder hooping in both currents. I used to get so frustrated and tense, but I would keep trying...usually to no avail. All that determination did eventually pay off, but oddly enough, it finally clicked very well for me after several days off. So I learned that, for me, sometimes it's better to take a break from trying a certain trick, even just a day or two. It's like my body needs a little while to rest and think about it or something.
Some times when I'm learning a new trick I just keep practicing untill I get really frustrated. Then I take a break from it for a while. Maybe a couple days or even weeks later come back to the trick and some times it just comes to me. I tried forever to learn the shoulder duck-out. And I just gave it a break for a couple weeks. Then one day my friend and I were hooping and I asked her if she could do a shoulder duck-out and I did it the first time. When I am not thinking to hard to try a trick it just happens. Idk if that's the same way for every one else.
I find that I always obsess about a trick for quite a bit of time and do it over and over and over again and usually I just try really hard and think about it really intensely in a short period of time. More often than not, I end up giving up frustrated. Like Nikki and Traci, I give up for a little while and then eventually come back to it usually during a jam and finally, it just clicks! Usually when I try too hard, I overthink it. When I just let go and try it out, sometimes it just clicks. Some really technical tricks, it helps to break up in smaller, more digestable pieces.
I get crazy about new tricks and if I cant get one then I do it over and over and over again but when I start getting frustrated then I just do my normal freestyle routine and then try again in 10-15 minutes. Like some of the other girls said, breaking it down and moving through it as slow as you can works really well. I'll also find videos on youtube or hoopcity where someone is doing that same trick and watch it again and again. Seeing someone else doing it helps me know what the rhythm should look/feel like and that helps me a lot as well.
oh mann i get frustrated a lot it took me a month to get the scorpion down. the best way to go about it is to remind your self that you will eventually get it if you keep working at it and practice. hooping is like any other hobby or sport and practice makes perfect as they say!
ahhh story of my life!

what i like to do when i am trying to learn a trick is first off, video tape myself doing it. i also will take many mini breaks from trying it because i have found that if i am not doing a trick right, sometimes i end up messing it up more if i am impatient with it. secondly, i search youtube and here for any tutorials i may find on it. i have found that seeing what other people suggest for each trick really helps, plus you can see the trick step by step. doing the trick in slow motion also helps. if you have a local hoop group, it is especially nice to find someone in the group that can do the trick, have them watch you, then make more suggestions for you.
I do it repeatedly until I can't take anymore... then I flow for a little, then I might try it a few more times. If I still don't get it then I wait until later in the day or until the next day. If it STILL doesn't come then I just practice my flow for a few days and then try it repeatedly again. Just try to remind yourself that you're gonna get it eventually, it's just a matter of trying. It may seem impossible now, but once you get it you'll be laughing at yourself.
keep coming back to it. sometimes i get so frustrated that i want to throw the hoop across the room but i take a breather, sometimes wait a day then come back to it. using a different size hoops also has helped ALOT. some moves are easier to do with smaller hoops (like isolating type moves), while learning on-body tricks is sometimes a lot easier with a bigger hoop.
I agree with what some of the others have said, take a break, walk away. If you're practicing and practicting to the point of frustration and not getting anywhere, there's no sense in continuing. Hooping is supposed to be fun, right? Take a break for a day, a few days, a week, whatever. When you return to it, I can almost guaranty you'll discover you've made some headway during the break even though you haven't even practiced it once. It's amazing!
im still pretty new so i have a lot of tricks to learn... i try a few and get a couple, the one i didnt get i move on to three more and save that for another week, or maybe just give it a shot out of nowhere (sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt). i find watching peoples videos help, not necessarily tutorials but just people hooping, i get to see it in motion, kind of imagine myself doing the same move and hope the next time i get in the hoop i can nail it, or i keep trying til i do!
Hmmm...I like the idea of this visualization technique. I'll have to try this next time I'm working on chest rolls - I can see the hoop gently rolling now =)
