Using HDPE or Polypro - I know that some hoops are so small that they cannot coil down onto themselves - like 26" or 28", or mini's. What is the smallest possible size for a coil-down hoop?

I currently use a 30'' and a 28'' which i never coil down. I think anything below 30'' doesn't really need to be made collapsible. If your flying then a sectioned collapse hoop would be better than a coil down hoop. Your just running a risk of kinking the hoop since it collapses into such a small diameter. For example a 28'' hoop is 94in. (circumference of the hoop) divided by 2 = 47in. which converts to a mini under 17''.

I'm not looking to purchase or make a new hoop, I just want to know if I can coil down my LED and my polypro without hurting them. My LED is 32" and my poly is 31".

I've coiled my Astral LEDs. There 29"s. I don't coil them down super small. Just enough and use some grip tape to secure them down. .
I haven't done it very many times. Only when i had to send them through the mail. But I can see this working on a plane also.

I agree with Haley. If you want to coil them down but are afraid to coil them completely, then coil them halfway and use grip tape to hold it together. I've done that with some of my hoops when I wasn't quite sure how small they could go and was traveling. I'd just toss an almost dead roll of grip tape in my bag so I had enough for my trip.

OMG you totally read my mind with this post. I logged on to ask the same exact question. I have 2 hoops that I"m bringing with me on a trip to GA (I'm from OR so its gonna be by plane) both are polypro, and both are 31". Should I be okay to coil them down all the way? Or should I just coil them down some of the way and tape them?

yes a 30''-32'' can be coiled down. You don't wanna crank it down but gently pull the ends to connect.

Dont coil them down all the way! They are too small you could damage the tubing or the connector piece by trying. Instead coil them down half way and then tape them (packing tape), that way you dont risk straining the tubing and you can still coil them down pretty small.

So a 31" is too small to coil down all the way? At what size is it really too small? I'd like to be able to coil my hoops down so I can carry them with me at festivals and such without knocking them into people in the crowd.

I've had many experiences coiling down hula hoops from my personal hoops to shipping hula hoops from my etsy store.... A hoop 28'' and under do not coil it down. A hoop 30'' and up can be coiled down with no problem. It's all about how you coil down your hoop depends on if it kinks. No matter if you have a 38'' or a 31'' hoop you HAVE to be gently when coiling it down or it will kink.... You can use the tape method to coil them down if you don't think you can do it properly.

I'll work on posting a video of the proper way to coil down a hoop soon, and i'll use a a 30'' hoop.

Thank you! It's good to know I can coil my 30" down. Much appreciated <3

Thank you - let me know when your video is up!

When we ship our polypro "Convertible 221" (which has two connections resulting in being able to use one hoop (standard size from 34" - 44") or twin mini's (two 17" - 22"). We've made the twin mini's as small as 16". They work great, check them out......    https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.355155757855839.79618.204...

Oh yeah, this is actually two convertibles, and they have a strip of glow tape on them too......
