Sorry if this is a repeat question, but I searched the threads and couldn't find an answer to my question.  What steps do I need to take in order to become a "performer"?  (ie: get paid to hoop at birthday parties, events, etc.)  Someone said in another thread that you need a DBA (doing business as).  And I assume I would need insurance as a performer, right? Can someone help me out?

My understanding (for Pennsylvania, where I used to live)  is that you don't have to DBA if all your contracts are drawn in your real name and payments are made to you, not your stage name. If you want to use your stage name for contracts or payments, then you need to DBA. If you do business in your own name, then you are a "sole proprietor" for tax purposes and you'll get to fill in all kinds of fun new forms at tax time.

Insurance will vary depending on what sort of performances you are doing. The Specialty Insurance Agency carries coverage for street performers, jugglers, face painters, etc. (but not fire performers); they may be a good place to start. http://www.specialtyinsuranceagency.com/
