When you sell custom hoops locally; do you ask for money up front or after the hoop has been finished and delivered?

usually i just make them and ask for payment on delivery... but all my custom ones have been for friends. if i didnt know them i would ask for payment first (or at least a deposit of 50%). i dont do a lot of custom ones cause i usually have a big selection of already made hoops to pick from.
I've gotten cash afterwards most of the time. Mostly because people will order through Facebook or E-mail or if they are students in my class they may not have the cash on them the day they order.

I would recommend having 10 hoops pre-made at all times. This summer I started making hoops just for the hell of it and I would sell them almost instantly. It was crazy how quickly they would find a home. Some people even bought two because they liked both or decided to grab one for a friend as well.

The only major downside with that is the sizing so I make them a good size for beginners as those the majority of my clients and then more advanced hoopers tend to want a custom one anyway.

Much love,

I ask for money when the hoop's finished. It's usually not a problem, but right now I have a hoop whose intended owner won't return my calls. It's frustrating, because I ran out of tape while making it and called her to make sure she still wanted it before I ordered tape. Now it's finished and I'm just waiting. It's a BEAUTIFUL hoop and I"m confident I could sell it to someone else. THEN she'd call and want it, I'm sure.
That is one nice thing about pre making hoops. You never have to worry about running out of the tape colour because you just work with what you have.
Yeah, some days I feel like I'm cursed to always run out of tape mid-way ....same thing with beads back when I was doing custom macrame.

David: It just makes me CRAZY. If she doesn't want the thing, she should TELL me...or better yet have told me when I called to double-check.
I give most people a chance and take payment afterwards unless it's a really unusual request (something no one else will want). But switch people to cash-only after they have any problems.
for the hoops i've been making, i get the $$ up front, and tell them of an estimated time that they should expect the hoop. (i do about a week or so... i work full time and am in school - but then again, the people who i've sold to are my coworkers, so i think its a bit different). what i've been doing, is going around the office mid-week and letting everyone know i will be collecting the money on 'x date'. once i have it all, i start making the hoops, and then they get them the next week or so.

the money first was brought up to me by of the vp's of our company, she told me to make sure everyone paid me first, because if they really didn't want a hoop, i wouldn't go through the trouble of making one and buying materials only to have them back out then. i'd rather them back out before its made ya know?
I have been accepting payments after I made the hoop. I know the majority of the people I'm currently selling to, so I really don't have to worry about them backing out or not picking up the final product. I don't really make and keep hoops in stock to sell; mostly because if I don't make them with someone else in mind I have a hard time selling them. I guess I get attached. lol
I suffer from that too. I currently have 25+ hoops. I'll never be able to hoop with 25 at a time.
I like the idea of having a few hoops of differant sizes on hand and taking payment they recive the hoop. Also, I would suggest a time limite that people have to pick up or set a time to drop off the hoop. like most of the time it takes maybe a week so to make a hoop, yet I wouldn't hold the hoop for more two weeks then after that sale it to someone else whos not flaky.
I have actually been asked to make my first hoops to sell - 3 special order and I will be getting payment actually through a 3rd party. I am hooping I get paid anyway.
THE only reason I am doing this way is because I have been asked by someone I trust - I just hope the people come and get their hoops since I am only dealing with them on the phone and getting the colors they want (based on what I have.)

Otherwise I had already bought tubing to make myself a tone more (I am sooo greedy!)

Since I have the supplies already I am not out any actual money.
