Hello all. I just joined this website today and this is my first post.

I've dreamed of hoop dancing for the longest and almost gave up months ago when it didn't exactly work out right when I tried it on a cheap hoop at a sporting goods store. However, now, after doing a bit of research on it, I just found out the wonders of making your own hoop and discovered the beauty of Etsy. First, I got so excited about making my own hoop, but after looking up a few hoops on Etsy, I might just buy one. I especially love the hoops from SupaDupaHoolaHoopa! I'm thinking about buying either of these two some time this week:

Tranquility hoop

Sweet Sunflower hoop

I'm just not sure which size to get. Which one do you think is better for a beginner? Keep in mind that I could never even hula hoop as a child during recess TT___TT I'm 5'10'' and 200lbs, if that helps. Do you think it's best to make a hoop or to buy one?

And, most importantly, how did you get your hoop? I want to hear everyone's stories of how they obtained their hoop or, more specifically, their first hoop.

Thank you :)

I got my first hoop from a local hoop teacher. Then I started making my own, or buying gymnastics/school hoops online.

As for size, I use this as a metric: waist size * 1.3 for a slow hoop, * 1.2 for a medium hoop, or *1.1 for a fast hoop. There's a lot of range in that calculation, though. The full article where I explain it in detail is here: http://spinmatsuri.com/and-more/calculating-your-ideal-hoop-size/

I made my own and have over a dozen hoops I would love to sell you one or a pair of doubles that I can pick out myself for your body type since I am a pro at that kinda stuff

I've just received my first hoop. I bought it online on DaWanda, a website just like Etsy. I wanted to buy a hoop from a German shop, because I didn't want to spend a fortune on shipping and additional taxes and I didn't want to wait for weeks for my hoop to arrive, because I am super impatient. Otherwise I probably would have bought on Etsy, because there's a wider choice of different hoops on there. Mine is a beautiful handmade black and blue hoop with some funny flower tape that looks a bit like a granny's wallpaper :) I absolutely love it and it's even prettier than it looked in the pictures. And it's fun to play with as well!

i made mine my self...the tubing was actually given to me by a friend who works in concrete and i bought the tape from various craft stores. every thing i read recommended measuring from the floor to your belly button and starting with a hoop that size

I have a water weighted hoop from Walgreens that sucks, but I can do some off body stuff with it. I am in the process of ordering my first "proper" hoop from StellerStuff on Etsy. She has been great working with me on size, weight and such. I think she is sort of a new Etsy seller.

Those hoops are beautiful! Love the Tranquility hoop. By her size chart I'd suggest you go with the 3/4" 160psi tubing and the L or XL size (40-42").

My first hoop came from Hoopnotica and it was the Desert Rose. It's made of the 3/4" 160psi tubing and is about 41 inches in diameter. It was a perfect starter hoop for me, though a little pricey (theirs are about $50 each—which is why I then learned to make my own). I totally support buying hoops from Etsy sellers though. They usually have great prices. Hoopnotica's are great and sometimes have tapes you can't find elsewhere, but they just cost so much more.
