Who makes an LED that looks white when stationary but leaves color trails when moving quickly?

Hey hoopers,

I got an amazing internship position this summer so to reward myself I would like to buy another LED. I have seen videos of these hoops that look white when not moving or moving slowly but when moved quickly around the body they leave trails of color,

Does anyone know who makes them or where I could find them?

I'm fairly positive you're referring to dragonfly, or rainbow ribbons. Psi hoops make beautiful dragonfly leds: http://www.psihoops.com/hoops.htm or moodhoops has The Spectrum with dragonfly leds, just called rainbow ribbons: http://moodhoops.com/shop/spectrum/

I have a custom hoop from Cosmic Hooper that's alternating white solid LEDs and rainbow "meteor" LEDs. It's super pretty. It cost me about $150.

These types of lights are called strobing LEDs and pretty much every LED hoop maker has them in a variety of colors. The colors they show while the hoop is still depends on which colors they strobe when moving.

I have an older hoop from Moodhoops they called Watermelon.. it looks white when stationary but strobes green white and pink when moving. I think the PSIhoops dragonfly looks much sweeter though.

I <3 the dragonfly leds in my psihoop!

The rainbow trails you see are dragonfly leds that are white when stationery.  The solid color trails are elfin leds.

The Helix from Proton Labs (www.proton-labs.com) does this as well.  It actually has a lot of strobe modes like this that look like a solid color when sitting still and then show various colors while it's in motion.

The Helix is the ONLY hoop that allows you to pick every single color that it strobes through using the included software though.  For example, you can choose from millions of colors and choose for it to quickly strobe through shades of red, pink and purple only!  While sitting still the hoop would look like a blend of those colors, probably a light pink and then in motion you would see every single color you picked come alive!

The effect is shown with 2 different color schemes at 0:50 in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmBvObbwLmE

You can see a pattern called "7-up" that's green, yellow, and white as well as the exact pattern you're describing using red green and blue right after it.

Thanks that information...this is one of the things that was holding me back from purchasing. Now to another question: can the fade be slowed down enough so that the colors blend into one another more than in the video? (I would like to not have the black "empty" spaces between lights/colors)

Yes!  The spaces in both of those particular patterns were actually put there on purpose but don't have to be there at all.  That strobe mode repeats just through a list of colors that you can create.  One of them was created using the following color list:

Red
(Black)
Green
(Black)
Blue
(Black)

There are some pattern presets that don't have the black spaces included as well, or you could easily create your own with the software to remove the gaps just by removing the black colors in-between like:

Red
Green
Blue

One last thing is that you also have complete control over the strobe speed itself.  In those shown in the video it's set pretty fast but it can be set to 4 times that speed to where the color 'slices' are very very skinny and it strobes VERY fast.  You could also just drag the slider down in the software to lower the strobe speed so that the slices are very wide and look like big blades!

One other example is at 0:24 in the same video that shows another included preset for the "Strobe" mode.  It shows 8 colors strobing without space followed by a big space.  This was created using the following color list:

Red
Orange
Yellow
Green
Blue
Indigo
Violet
Black
Black
Black

Hopefully watching the video again with this information gives you an idea of all of the crazy ideas that are included (and you can modify or make yourself) with the Helix!

That does help. It just goes so fast that I can't tell very well where one pattern ends and the next begins! :)

I know you already sold the 100 that were definitely set to deliver in April. Do you know when the next ones may be expected? (Say if I buy one this week...)

I've been updating the website every few days and I'm just about to update the website with the newest status again -- thanks for checking.

Orders placed now should be shipped in the first week of May.  Hopefully that is still true by the end of the week but of course it all depends on how many other orders get placed between now and then.

I have a spectrum from moodhoops and it is muy perfecto if you like the dragonfly strobes, not to mention very well priced.
