I use ribbon to make my hoops. I normally used 7/8" but have used 1 1/2" too. I find grosgrain ribbon is extra grippy, but I've used shiny ribbons too. I can hoop with them just fine but they are slipperier so more difficult for beginners. I just put some double sided tape (roller kind for crafts) on the ribbon every 8-12 inches and wrap it like you would with sparkly tape. It's much easier to wrap because if you make a mistake you can easily remove it and make the correction. After the ribbon is on I use gaffers tape as normal to hold the ribbon down and add grip. Yeah, ribbons work great, especially if you tape down their edges, just know that fabric hoops get dirtier much faster.
