Hooping sometimes seems like it is a very female dominated activity. At times I tell people that as a male hooper I would qualify myself as being in the equivalent of WNBA of hooping. While I find it interesting how many women you can attract with a hula hoop (And before anybody asks, that is definitely not why I got into hooping) I am still often confronted by the question "Are you gay?" in reference to the fact that I am so into hooping.

And then there's the inevitable. No matter how good you Mr. John Hoop Doe gets at hooping, a female with absolutely no inkling of hooping skill is still going to garner more praise then a male hooper standing on his hands, hooping on his neck and juggling with his toes, lets just face it, the female form is held in much higher regards than the male's,now and always, hence Playboy being more successful than ever whilst Playgirl is discontinuing being published.

A quick search of the 567 members on this site so far turns up only 39 dudes, and I kind of think maybe a few of those are girls who hit the wrong button when filling out their profiles, heck my profile still lists my birthday as January 5th, and I'm a Taurus!

But I digress, I just wanted to post this out there for any other guys out there that might feel shy about their hooping, I just want to say fuck that! I am a beer drinking, meat eating, ultimate fighter watching, head banging to heavy metal MAN-MADE-OF-80PERCENT-HAIR, and I am a Fucking-A Hula Hooping Monster! So to you 38 or less other dudes on here, more power to you, and for any guys reading this and thinking about it, there is nothing more manly than a guy who is in touch with and aware of his body.

AMEN!!!! My boyfriend is better than me at hooping... I'll work for a month on a trick and he'll do it in one try! But for some reason he is so self conscious about hooping in public t! I think guy hoopers are SEXY AS HELL... it shows that you are confident in your masculinity :)
Ha ha. My boyfriend is the same. I can look at a video, see a move and say "oh my god, oh my god, that's amazing what IS she/he doing?" and he will just go "oh, it's this" and do the move instantly. He is good at every sport and I think natural co-ordination and a logical brain (neither of which I have) really helps.
oooo yea. i met my boyfriend because he was the first male hooper i ever saw. he can see a trick two times and understand it while it takes me a month or two. he hasn't even been hooping as long as i have and he is a million times better than me. but its nice to have someone to work with all the time on new ways to create flow and unique tricks
I was wondering where all the boys were in this community! Good to hear from you ;-)
Go BOYEEE!
Taurus represent!

Right on, I get really excited whenever I see a guy hooping. My friend recently picked it up, and he's catching on so fast...and he's really pumped about it, too! I love it.
Right on! I need to show this to my boyfriend. He likes to pick up my hoop and waist hoop and he tries the beam me up, which he's getting quite good at. =) Butttttt he still won't totally get into it and try to learn new things with me....citing that he feels like a girl doing it. Maybe you can change his mind!
Funny how all the replies here are from girls!! My partner doesn't hoop but I am in the process of indoctrinating my 2 sons, check out my pics of them hooping! My eldest son is great, he has a lot of power and confidence, he is gonna bust out and over take me sooner or later! I worry that he will start to think that hooping is girlie and uncool as he gets older, but your post has given me hope Danny!
Right on!

I actually wondered if you guys (and I do mean the guys) would like a group or space for yourselves?

Let me know and I can either create a group or a forum section for the boys. The girls can still play but the focus will be on male hooping. It could have general topics, examples videos, etc. ; )

There are some truly amazing hoopers out there that are male and it's so cool to witness their styles.
Sounds like a good idea. I for one would contribute and I look forward to sharing this space with others.
me personally i dont really think we need a seprate area for male hoopers as A that aspect of this community is soo small and B there is a man hooper group that is pretty inactive already.

also i hate to see a gender divesion in this community which i percive as having quite a lot of solidarity
*bazzilion* styles and philosophys and paths but solidarity nontheless.

peace and hoops
Danny, is today's 'Photo of the day' on Hooping.org a photo of you?
