Your Performance Name/ Website Name/ Names Directory on Hooping.org

Hi Hoopers!

Yesterday I saw a post on FaceBook from a hooper who has been performing for 10 years under her stage name and her company's name.  It seems that some newer hoopers ( total of 4), have, quite unintentionally and by accident, taken her company name, or something very similar, like switching the words order, and begun businesses using these names.
One performer has actually taken this hooper's stage name and used it.

So, for some of the newer hoopers here, I wanted to mention that Hooping.org has a directory of performance names and hoop group names that you can check on before you invest in a website and make your name official.  Legally, names belong to whoever used them first.  As a community, we should respect each other's identity.

The hooping names directory, listing of already claimed names, can be found here:

Hooping.org Magazine's Hooping Names Directory is our community service reference point for those seeking to become hoop performers and/or open hooping
businesses. The goal is to prevent two hoopers, hoop businesses, or
hoop troupes from winding up with the same name. Such a list is based
on a precedent already set by the burlesque and roller derby communities which, like hooping, have also blown up in recent years.

While listing yourself in the Hooping Names Directory can't offer legal protection, it's a community-based way for hoop performers to say, "Hi!
I'm here" and for new hoop lovers to see what's come before them. It's
our hope that you will honor our community by not choosing a name that
is the same, or even confusingly similar, to something that already
exists.

Please add your hooping name ALONG WITH THE WEB SITE LINK by leaving your information in the comment area below. The comment section is located at the bottom of this page. If you do not have a hooping
related web site, a Facebook profile or MySpace page or such will
suffice. This info is needed so we can check to see if names are still
in use in the future and so someone can contact you should there ever
be a conflict. For more information on why this is needed, please see: Protecting Names, Identities and Trademarks.

If you are here for the first time and you see that a name you are using is already on the list contact that person directly and let them know so the two of you can figure it out. That's what this list is for.
Thank you for taking part in helping to create a community where we can
all grow and prosper.

I tried submitting my name, which isn't on the list yet, but it still hasn't been added, and that was nearly a month ago. :(
The editor of Hooping.org has been traveling this month.
I know because I saw him there in Sarasota Florida for the premiere of "The Hooping Life" ^_^

I think it also says on the names directory that it gets updated about once per month, so I am sure it is coming soon!
I listed my name months ago and just now had my name added....have no fear...they will add you:)
I have been in the situation where we named an event after another performers classes without knowing. It was very unfortunate and caused several problems for the performer and for our event promoter. I strongly advise everyone who is looking for names for themselves, their business, or classes to google and bing everything so that this awkward situation does not happen to you!! I felt horrible about the whole thing!! That being said, I received several e-mails from friends of the performer actually threatening legal action!!! I am not directly involved in the naming of the event and was horrified at how some hoopers lashed out at me. If you feel that someone has stolen your name or a friends name, please contact them nicely to discuss it. Chances are they will be more than understanding. I do not enjoy waking up and checking my e-mail only to find four e-mails telling me that "lawyers are no fun"...trust me I know, my uncle is a patent attorney for a national law firm:) These issues are bound to come up and if we can all be kind and try to talk through problems, I see no reason why anyone should feel the need to threaten legal action! Much love to you all and I wish everyone, including myself, the best of luck with this issue!!!

I recently did the same thing when we were looking for a name for the Edmonton hoop troupe. I ended up using Carnival Collective as a placeholder until we could think of a different name (knowing it was already in use by a troupe in Europe) Then I went to Bali and we never followed through and it was somewhat forgotten. I got an e-mail from the other troupe saying that people were confusing us. I was actually REALLY surprised that there had been cross over seeing how I had done little to no advertising for the troupe since it was only casually started up prior to leaving.

Naturally I was very apologetic for leaving that name up for so long and removed the show listing from my site with the only reference to that name being a title within a YouTube video.

It's really impressive how quickly two companies can be seen by similar people. Years ago you could easily share a company name and it was a non issue. With globalization and online markets we now have to be really careful about crossover causing confusion.

Much love,
SaFire
Well said. My main regret is that we did not research the name better to make sure it wasn't already being used. I LOVE the performance directories...sooooo helpful when trying to pick names!
I tried re-submitting my name and post too - i couldn't find a record that I had done either in the comment feed. Hopefully, it was just tucked away among all the spam that hooping.org gets and will be all good from here. :)
I have submitted mine twice in as many months - also without being able to find a record of having done so.
Guys, try adding your name as a comment on the actual page on hooping.org.

I emailed Philo recently and he says he struggles to keep up with the thousands of emails that hit his inbox daily. It's much easier for him to keep track of website comments.
That's where I commented. I will be patient though. :)
It really did take a while for me to get added and I remember thinking that perhaps the comment had not gone through. Like you said, be patient:) as hard as it may be!!! You will get added and you can still establish your name on here as well!
