Hi all!
I'm fairly new, I teach a small group of ladies to hoop which has been lovely. Nothing fancy, just basics. You know what I mean?
At the advice of a family member who also sells insurance I was told that I should get coverage for my teaching classes (liability insurance).
So investigate this and I'm told that I have to NOT ONLY get insurance for my teaching (through SportsCan) but I also MUST get insurance for any hoops that I MAKE and sell that are used. THat I cannot have one or the other...it is a stipulation that I MUST cover both. The hoop insurance being covered by a separate company.
I investigated the cost and it's about 1800/year to cover both. YIKES.
Do any of you ladies who have insurance cover BOTH? Am I being taken advantage of here?
Can you offer any wisdom?
I would like to do things properly, but I feel very defeated and it's completely sucking the joy out of hooping and I feel like giving up.
Thanks for letting me rant, I hope that those of you who are long time hoopers have some great wisdom.
Sincerely,
Dreena.

Permalink Reply by joanne on February 3, 2011 at 11:58am so funny you bring up this topic. I started teaching circus yoga and kids yoga along with hoop and other circus skills like diabolo, juggling etc in September 2010. i could not get insurance because i was not certified in anything. how are you certified in Circus???? how could i teach classes to get certified if i did not have insurance to teach classes. arghhhh!!!
as strange as it sounds i ended up going through Clowns Canada and my local Clown Alley to get insurance. i am not sure what it all covers to tell you the truth but i know it has a 1 million liability. If someone get hurt and sues you that is why you need liability. With memberships to Clowns Canada and Clown alley and then the insurance it cost about $200 a year. i cannot work with fire, animals or henna. After the fact i found out it does not cover the yoga piece of it but by the time renewal comes up i will be certifed in YogaKids and then have to look at it all again.
I also teach circus at a gymnastics centre and as long as i am under the roof of a gymnastics centre my coaches insurance covers me no matter what i teach. That is about $75 a year and graciously covered by my employer.
i had to look a little outside the box but would love to hear about other teachers insurance situations.
Best of luck.

Oh my goodness Joanne, thank you for this reply.
It is FRUSTRATING! Isn't it.
I wonder if the hooping would be covered by Clowns Canada. (and yes HOW DO you get certified in CIrcus..LOL)
I will look this up and your reply is greatly appreciated!

I also teach hoop classes and sell hoops. Because I rent the space personally, I have a personal liability insurance, which covers me for teaching and the hoops. Most places require some sort of policy in order to rent. Liability insurance is a wise move for many reasons, i.e. property damage, injuries to students. I found my insurance through a broker that I deal with for home and auto insurance. The cost you were quoted is absolutely outrageous. My insurance isn't cheap, but its a heck of a lot cheaper than $1800/year! And it doesn't have to be through SportsCan. Shop around with some insurance companies, I'm sure you will find a more reasonable plan. Good luck! If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me!

Hi Kelly,
I'll send you a DM, I would love to know who your provider is for your insurance. I'm in the same boat as you.
I'll even shop around for another broker on the good word of another if need be! My home and auto insurance is with AMA and they really didn't understand what I was talking about when I tried to explain it, why is hoopdance so hard to understand!?
