Hey, everyone! Just checking with all you Instructors out there to see how you handle Insurance- do you do general liability or some other form of Insurance to cover you if someone is hurt in one of your classes? If you do use some other form, could you please share the type of Insurance and where you purchased it? Thank you!

Hi Dorne - I have performers' insurance thru Specialty Insurance Agency (link above). It's about $200 a year. Check them out. They also cover me for fire performance and will do a separate waiver for locations (included in the $200 fee). I needed one for World Hoop Day this past weekend at the school and for the parties I do. For hoop dance classes I have a waiver I have everyone sign. I can email it to you. I got the info from another hooper on here. It's similar to the one you guys used for Caroleeena's class at Jim's studio. Cara
USA Dollars $200.
i recently started teaching a class at a studio and the owner told me i'd have to get insurance but i also made out a waiver. is it really necessary with the waiver and if i get perfomers insurance?

Also, Cara what do you mean by a separate waiver for locations?

thank you!

Hi Aurora,

Performer's Insurance does not cover "athletic participation". It covers the performer should you get hurt during a performance or damage someone's property while performing (oops the hoop went right into the speaker! or you hit a spectator in the head with a hoop). There's no deductible and it's $210 per year. What I mean by 'separate waiver' is the insurance company issues an "Additional Insured Certificates" to cover the venue where you are performing. Some places require it. Others don't. If I know I'm performing in advance I just go ahead and request one and have them send it to me so I can keep it on file.

I always carry a camera with me when I perform because the policy says you need to document any incidents/damage etc.

For fitness classes you may need insurance to teach fitness classes. A waiver is a good 1st step but it is NOT insurance. You can still be sued and they will go after your personal assets. You can get fitness insurance even if you are not a certified fitness instructor (the premium payment is a little higher).

Ask the studio where you'll be teaching what type of insurance they need for you to teach. I don't know of a policy that covers both performer and fitness together.

I hope this info helps and that I haven't overwhelmed you. If you have any other questions let me know.

This sounds great but I am finding it difficult to find insurance for Canadians......    anyone?!  I think I'm going to have to e-mail sandra on this one...

thanks for all the info!

this is what my end findings were for my troupe, and for individual insurance (for canadians) http://www.hoopcity.ca/group/buildingyourownbusiness/forum/topics/s...

put it in the wrong discussion, technically!  hope others can find it of use...

Once I find out which underwriters my local insurance agency got the one-time insurance through, I will post it..

Angelica.

thank you cara for responding so soon!

this may be a stupid question that i have but does it matter that its not a fitness class? it's at a dance studio and im not sure if that makes a difference...?
I don't know and I'm not sure who to ask. Google it and let me know what you find. I'm dying to know too.  I did the same thing when I was teaching classes calling it "Hoop Dance" and avoiding the word fitness.
i know it's taken me a while to respond, but all this information is GREAT-- thanks, folks!
