So here's the thing, I'm what you might call "apple" shaped, as in almost all of my weight is in my boobs and tummy, I have no hips or defined waist (at all), and not really much junk in my trunk. I've been hooping for about a month now (with my giant 50"diameter 3/4" 160psi hoop) and while I am apparently some kind of pro at thigh/knee hooping, the hoop seemingly hates my waist (or lack thereof).

I start out at waist level and get maybe 1 revolution from the initial push before it falls to my thighs. Once it's at my thighs no matter the amount of wiggling and knee-bumping and praying I do, the hoop will not go back up to my waist. It just won't. I keep reading and hearing encouragement that with practice EVERYONE can waist hoop, but I'm wondering if my shape combined with general physics might make me an exception? It's cool with me if that's the case, because I know there's lots of other stuff I can do, but I'm getting to the point where frustration outweighs fun in my quest to waist hoop. Maybe I just want someone to admit that not everyone can do it so I can move past the waist fixation?

hey! so i don't want to discourage you but im truly telling you anyone can hoop with enough practice, and my sister is the perfect example. As you described your "apple" figure with no bum, she is pretty similar. It took her about 8 months to finally hoop around her waist and keep it up. I don't know how long you've been practicing but don't give up yet! it just takes time :)

Sorry, but you can learn it.  It's possible to hoop in all sorts of padded costumes and all sorts of body shapes.  What this tells me is that your movement (at the waist) is wrong.  It is right when it gets to your legs though.  The movement at waist and the movement at legs is different, as is the speed.  Don't try to make the two areas the same move.

Any chance you can post us up a short video so that we can see what you are doing and try to help?  And be proud!  Leg hooping is very hard!

I'm no pro at all... but maybe what you could try.. is really giving that waist revolution a big turn? I mean, really exaggerate the cirsular movement? If it means a lot to you to waist hoop you could try it.. if you're bigger around the middle than the hips then maybe that might be solution... perhaps you could practice the movement without the hoop.. I really don't think it should be impossible.. in my head if you keep your knees pretty straight and shoulder level apart it should help.. but that's just in my head! do you think you could post a video of you attempting? i found that doing that got me a lot of helpful suggestions (when it came to chest hooping) :) super vibes of good luck to you!

Hey lady,

Short of some weird bending of spacetime around your waist (that would be wicked cool, but I"m guessing that's not how it is :)), you can waist hoop if it's important to you. Really. The hoop will go to the place that it finds most "interesting," which is to say that it will go to the place with the most circular motion. If that's your hips, it'll gravitate there. Ditto knees, chest, whatever. If your waist has the most circular motion of any part of you, the hoop will want to be there.

Other things to consider:

1) Bare skin will trap the hoop best, then natural fabrics, then synthetic ones.

2) A taped hoop will grip you best, then a lightly taped one, then one that isn't taped at all.

Good luck, and whatever you choose, enjoy. :D

oh and I almost forgot! when i started hooping I couldn't keep it up either... but what I was told was to use my hip bone to push it up. so... if you hoop from right to left, you'd have to use your left hip bone and vice versa. being an indian and quite used to dancing to bollywood dancing at weddings :P i understood the movement and got past my barrier.. here's a basment jaxx fav of mine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LU4Y3A3oJRM - the vid has a lot of hip bumping in it.. but whereas they're going up to down.. try going down to up! lol.. i hope this is making sense. :)
It took me a month to get waist hooping (I'm a bit of an apple myself) In the end I made myself a new hoop and I managed it straight away with the new one. It's about 42 inches. Have you watched Safire's tutorials? She's got some great tips on waist hooping. Good luck. x x x

Ok, I got way brave and got a quick video. The first part with the skirt shows how the hoop falls from my waist, and the second part with the shorts shows how I can't get the hoop back up from my thighs. Thanks for the help, you guys are all pretty awesome.

Yes!! you should definitely try bumping your hips... maybe you could hoop around your neck and lift your arms up and through the hoop so that you have more time with the hoop in the upper region of your body... but you should also watch safire's tutorial on getting it from knees to waist.. she details this side to side motion that helped me crack it.. cos right now you're moving back to front.. after the little kick up motion, it's all about the quick side to side shimmy! good luck and post any accomplishments!! xx

Ok, HOW CUTE ARE YOU!??!?!

And I'm totally jealous of your ability to leg hoop.  :)

Just keep working at it ... you'll get it. I posted a small vid in the 'double belly' thread of myself hooping, maybe it'll help? What about a heavier hoop? I find that it was WAY easier to waist hoop with more weight... I just filled my hoop with water and voila. Instant weight.

Good luck!!  You can do it!

my hula hoop instructor told me that the hoop will travel to the tip of the cone, whether that be your "bunny ear" or "chicken wing" of an arm, or your mid section or your chest. Think of your waist as the base of the cone, your chest is the tip, and your knees are the reverse tip. The hoop can be caught naturally at your waist if you have one, if you have no natural waist you are then working against the cone, since gravity is also in play the hoop drops.  there are a couple of ideas I would suggest. 1. stand with your legs apart to make your thighs wider than your stomach which could hopefully keep the hoop up. 2. Try chest hooping, which will strengthen you and allow you to use your upper bodyand your boobs :) keep the hoop up. it may allow for you to feel the rhythm of the hoop more, remember keep ur arms up and your base wide and practice, practice, practice!!!!

Thanks for all the help, everyone. I'm not giving up just yet, but I've decided to switch my focus for a while to give my brain/body some time to work stuff out with the waist hooping. I'll definitely come back to read this thread for all the tips and ideas when I give the waist stuff a try again.

I like the idea of working on neck/chest hooping for a while, as my upper body could really use the movement/fluidity. Today's practice was neck hooping, and I was actually successful for the first time so far! There were still a few less-than-graceful moments (smack in the face followed by hoop falling on my toe), but I realized early in my hooping adventures that learning = bumps and bruises.

Thanks again, hoopers!

So excited right now... I got the hoop to travel from my knees to my waist! I'm still not entirely sure what sort of magic was involved and I still can't keep it on my waist for very long, but I was able to do it more than once so I figure it's something I actually did and not just coincidence. The only thing is, I was only able to do it with bare skin (just undies). I'm trusting that with practice I'll be able to add pants back into the mix?

At any rate, it feels like I'm making progress and that is making me very happy.

Yay!
