So here's the thing, I'm what you might call "apple" shaped, as in almost all of my weight is in my boobs and tummy, I have no hips or defined waist (at all), and not really much junk in my trunk. I've been hooping for about a month now (with my giant 50"diameter 3/4" 160psi hoop) and while I am apparently some kind of pro at thigh/knee hooping, the hoop seemingly hates my waist (or lack thereof).

I start out at waist level and get maybe 1 revolution from the initial push before it falls to my thighs. Once it's at my thighs no matter the amount of wiggling and knee-bumping and praying I do, the hoop will not go back up to my waist. It just won't. I keep reading and hearing encouragement that with practice EVERYONE can waist hoop, but I'm wondering if my shape combined with general physics might make me an exception? It's cool with me if that's the case, because I know there's lots of other stuff I can do, but I'm getting to the point where frustration outweighs fun in my quest to waist hoop. Maybe I just want someone to admit that not everyone can do it so I can move past the waist fixation?

Hey, it's been a couple of months since your last post on this thread; how is the quest to waist hoop coming? :)
Well, I certainly wouldn't call myself skilled or graceful yet, but I can keep the hoop around my waist at least for a short while, and I'm getting pretty good at recovering it when it starts to slip down. So I would say it's progressing! Thanks again to everyone for all the interest and help.
Hi, I've only just watched your video. It's great that you are starting to get it now, and that you can recover it. Don't worry, clothes can reenter the mix shortly. The thing I noticed instantly from the video is that you lean your body forward. You push your bottom out and peer down. This means your pelvis is tilted down. Classic positioning to ensure the hoop goes down. It is the way experienced hoopers lower the hoop - pelvis tilted down. A lot of hooping is about posture. Stand up straight, bottom tucked in, pelvis up. Don't look down. Do that and you will keep it up longer.

So, I know it's been some time since I started this thread, and tonight I decided to take a quick video to show that I actually have made some progress. It's sloppy and rough, but not only am I officially a waist hooper, I've also figured out how to do the lift from waist to lasso.

The end of the video includes some shoulder hooping. I'm pretty sure that I need to just relax my shoulders more with that. I get all tense and penguiney trying to keep the hoop up.

Also, I didn't have the camera on (of course), but tonight I totally rocked waist hooping in my reverse current! The odd part is that I kind of have to trick myself into doing it by starting on my thighs and wiggling it up to my waist. I don't care if I have to do things weird though, I'm making progress and I'm moving my body, so it's awesome.

Thanks again for all the hoop love and support.

That's great, Basimah!  Keep up the good hooping. :)

hey, I so feel you on the waist hooping, Im plus size myself, also somewhat of an apple shape, and with not that much junk in the trunk either lol I have trouble waist hoop but i find myself getting better, if I stand still I cant keep it up long, it just wants to drop down to my knees but i noticed if I turn my body as I do it, it will stay up for as long as I keep turning. It really does help with feeling the motion better, it almost reminds me of doing the washer machine (its a dance move). dont give up keep tryin, even if you work on other tricks and just get back to waist hooping another day(thats what i do when i start getting frustrated with it).
