Hi hoopals,

I was at Sophie's class last night, and was thinking about how far I've gone with my passion for hooping in the past year and a half. I was remembering how the hoop seed was planted for me, and thinking about how it blossomed.

I was wondering how you all got into hooping? What sent you down this path?

For me, I was at the Folk Fest two summers ago and saw a blond woman hooping in a parade (I still have not succeeded in identifying her (not Sophie, not Brigitte)). She seemed so happy, free and graceful. At the same time, I was looking for a fun activity to get my body moving again after having been ill for a long time. One of my good friends lent me her step-daughter's kiddy hoop. I would make contests with myself to see how many times I could keep it spinning on my waist without dropping it.

One evening I googled "Ottawa + hooping" and found info on Sophie's classes at the Glebe Community Center. When I called them, I was disappointed to learn that she wasn't teaching that season because she was pregnant. I googled again, a few days later, and on the second page of results found info on Dovercourt's hooping classes. By this time, it was the second week of September 2009, and I'd missed Brigitte's first beginner class but was happy to join the group by the second class. I've been hooked ever since.

That was my story. What's yours?

Good story! :D

I was having a tea date with an old friend who I had not seen in over 5 years. We excitedly made plans to catch up and at the last minute she asked if I would mind coming to do her hoop class instead of tea and we could chat after the class.

It was Trish's class at Dovercourt. I think my friend Kristine set me up on purpose as she had thought of me instantly when she started hooping, thinking this would be just for me.

She was RIGHT! :D The rest is history....

completely hooked now, to my core and so grateful for the introduction from such a wonderful friend~

I used to be a dancer, gym bunny and decent climber, not much of a team sport person. Really fit with scary low body fat. Then after pregnancy I thought I'd never be active ever again, got depressed over my change in lifestyle. In some magazine I read an article about an Australian girl who was the current World Champion Hooper (article declined to say how that title came bout and what she had to do for it) however this chick was ripped! Her clothes were fantastic! It looked so artistic! She said it was the most fun ever and did not feel like exercise. Never having been able to hoop as a kid I thought I'd find out about it. Took me close to four years but I found Dovercourt's classes whilst taking my daughter to camp there. Like Anne, I missed a registration and had to wait one term. I love it, won't miss a class if I can help it. Just wish I could find practice time. So thanks to all my hoop pals!

Well, I have just just started hooping. I literally started my first Class on May 1st, with Brigitte at Dovercourt :)

I wasn't even aware that there were classes being taught in Ottawa, until a friend of mine told me that she wanted to take hula hooping class and figured that if there was a friend who'd go with her, it would be me. I of course, accepted, and I gotta say, it is so much fun!

I'm definitely hooked. Now if only the weather would stop being so gloomy, I could spend more time outside to practice! My living room doesn't allow for some of the tricks I've learned so far :)

I came across Hooping online... I stumbled across Safire's video love the process... then I did some research... built my first hoop and started practicing in my living room... that was over a year ago... I've had some setbacks, like being in and out of a cast for the last 5 months, but I still hoop! I am up to 5 personal hoops, have made hoops for friends and friends kids, but now I am looking for classes or just a hoop group to join (for community) and hoop it up a few times a month... I seem to be spreading hoop love, and really want to move forward with my hooping...

My Cast comes off this friday and I am super excited about joining a class... so if you know of one or are starting one.... lemme know....

I am hooplessly hooked!

Hey Anne,

It looks like you and I were both trying to get into hooping with Sophie at the same time. :)  As she wasn't teaching for baby reasons, I waited until the spring session when she was back and started with her in April 2010.  I had been wanted to do it for awhile; every time I checked out the schedule at Glebe, I would almost register, but then I wouldn't.  I am so glad I finally put my big girl panties on and went to that first class!  It's funny, I was so self-conscious about trying to hoop and being active again.  There was a mix up with registration and some of us got sent to the wrong place the first class.  So there we were trying to find Sophie, and the hooping class.  I hate being late for things. (I know, odd, because I am always late for hoop class. :) )I was standing there feeling really out of place when a couple of the women with me asked if I was the instructor.  It's interesting how we see ourselves, and how others perceive us.

I learned a lot from my beginner class, and knew that this was something that I was going to continue doing, no matter what.  That last class when Sophie let us play with her psi hoops, that was hoop love.  So summer came and I met Trish at Dovercourt, and I haven't stopped hooping since!
