Hi everyone! I miss you guys and going to regular classes and jams!!
Here I am in Thunder Bay, hoping to create a community and getting people hooked on the hoop and spread the hoop love as there has been literally next to nothing here....well it took all summer and it's starting to happen...
Next month, I will be teaching a beginner level hoop class at a belly dancing studio. The owner has really been advertising this and I just sold 5 hoops in the past week and got some more requests. And so far, everyone has just wanted a hoop that is colourful yet simple with vinyl and grip tape hoop...which has been fine with me, as I have that method down pretty good. The owner borrowed a few of my extra hoops to show off to her belly dance students and allow them to try if they wanted. Anyway, the ones with the sparkly and prismatic tapes were ones I bought from Brigitte and Trish...but because they are so beautiful, the sparkly requests have started....
Thing is...I still haven't figured out how to use that kind of tape without it making crinkly sounds while hooping. I made one recently, and it looks darn perfect, but it sounds awful!!! I wouldn't sell it...but any advice how to fix this problem??
I know I could probably post this in the main forums for all hoop city, but I thought I'd start at my hooping roots.
Thanks for any help!!

Permalink Reply by Trish of Sirenhoops on August 23, 2011 at 8:57pm hi Sheena! Glad to hear things are cooking in Thunder Bay. Jenny's right: practice makes progress. I've never had a hoop sound crinkly, so it must be that there are pockets of air under the tape. Smooth, flat application is your goal. The angle can make a difference: a steeper angle will be harder to keep smooth. I keep quite a bit of tension on the roll of tape as I am wrapping, and I smooth it constantly as I wrap, with the other hand/ thumb so that there are no creases and it is flat against the tubing.
Also I only unpeel the paper just a bit ahead of where I am, and at intervals I cut the paper backing and let it fall. If you unwrap too much of it, you can end up with a sticky mess if the tape gets caught on itself. If the edges of the tape are a little creased or rippled, this will usually be hidden by your top layer of tape (either vinyl or grip), so sometimes the hoop will look a bit rough until it's fully taped (kind of like sewing clothes, when you do a facing or hem and it transforms into a finished looking product). It used to take me ages to tape a hoop, and I got a sore neck, back and hands from taping and checking edges, spacing etc. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your replies. Air bubbles are my problem and thinking it will stretch a bit like the vinyl and grip table is another thing..and that darn backing....gee this stuff isn't easy. It is going to take a lot of practice gpr me, I don't seem to have a knack for this type of tape..
I did recently do up 2 hoops with sparkly tape -- went super duper slow....took me over an hour just to go around the hoop 1 time with this stuff... and I ended up putting a little too much space between the tape so the grip and vinyl didn't cover the edges as much as I would have liked - but it didn't crinkle! So that's a start. lol Anyway, me babbling...
Two weeks until my first class -- I'm not really prepared...music, course curriculum..what kind of teacher I want to be...and more hoopssssss.......Happy Friday!

Permalink Reply by Serenity Spins Sheena on August 26, 2011 at 7:46pm Yeah no kidding about the pet hair lol -- I probably could do a better job at wiping that down...it's hard - Lucy doesn't like to be near me when I hoop; she's scared of it moving, but when I make hoops, she will ALWAYS sit with me.
I remember when we first met Jenny, I told you I had this deep feeling I wanted to teach hoop...I didn't know how that would happen in Ottawa as there are now a good group of wonderful teachers there...but what do ya know -- somehow unplanned ended up here and now I'm about to teach -- synchronicity at it's best...the universe is something else..
