If you're new to hooping, here are a few leads to help you find the material you need. The cool thing about hooping is that you don't need to get a lot of gear. At the least, one adult size quality hoop, and your good to go.

I'm hoping members can add info to this discussion as we go along.

1) Where to find a high quality hoop
We are lucky in Ottawa to have amazing teachers who have accumulated the most up to date information on hooping making. They can supply you with a top notch hoop from prices averaging between $40-$50.

Trish and Brigitte sell hoops. You can meet them at Dovercourt (check course and hoop jam schedules) or contact them through their website at www.sirenhoops.com.

Jenny A. sells hoops. You can communicate with her through this site or via her website at http://www.rainedanceyoga.blogspot.com/

Sophie sells hoops too. Here's her site: http://www.minicirque.ca/

I (Anne B.) make hoops as well and quite enjoy it. My site is: http://cerceaumanie.com.

If I've forgotten anyone, please let us know.

Also of note, collapsible hoops can be made if you need portability. These tend to be a bit more expensive due to labour. I bring mine when I travel.

2) Poi
Sophie sells Poi.

3) Hoop huggers
These are hoop covers to protect your hoop and/or help you carry more than one hoop at a time. Jenny makes these. I love mine! You do get puzzled looks from non-hoopers, but it's funny to see their faces.

4) What to wear
Your pretty much free to wear what you want, but I find that cotton blend tank tops work best (as per Trish's suggestion).

I like yoga pants for bottoms and stretchy shorts for thigh hooping.

I'm currently looking into getting dansneakers because I need good arch support... but some people prefer to hoop barefoot. Dance shoes aren't necessary. For the dansneakers, you can go to an area dance supply store like Brio and Malabar or if you know your size you can always order from places like Zappos Canada.

That's all I can think of for now. Hope this is useful.

On the footwear note, I have jazz sneakers made by Bloch that I got at Malabar (I believe Brio would carry them too). I love them for several reasons. They are flexible & more streamlined than fitness shoes so you can point your feet & toes. They have a bit of height in the sole & heel, which I personally enjoy (being on the short side), and that provides a bit of cushioning when moving around and jumping. They provide some protection for your feet when you drop the hoop (not so common these days, but in my early days of hooping…). They are slippy on the bottom so you can turn & spin easily which is so important in hooping.

Some people like the leather jazz shoe that fits your foot like a sock with a tiny heel. Very sleek, allows spinning and foot hooping, and protects the feet from dirty floors.

For clothing, cotton blends have more friction than dry-weave and some other synthetics. Baggy clothes can get in the way of the hoop; more fitted is recommended. And if you are chest/ shoulder hooping, arms and shoulders should be bare for better friction.

Any one heard anything about this Montreal company Light up and Juggle? I promised myself a treat after working out and hooping for 3 months that I would buy an LED hoop. (they have a fibre optic one too, very cool)

I like the fact that they are near by,so I can pick it up, no shipping, and Canadian. Were have people gotten their LED hoops from? Recommendations?

I know PSI is the biggie, but I don't want to spend 400$ on a hoop.

The product and company look great Averyl, but I'd look at a couple of other discussion threads on hoopcity - I've seen one of reviews of led hoops. I'm in the market for one too, and was looking at www.moodhoops.com. Anne's from Trick Concepts is really nice too... I wish I knew more about this, and I hope you'll share your research with us!

Light up and juggle hoops were big and clunky and they rattle a lot.  These were Sophie's first glow hoops and Trish and I both purchased them but we don't use them anymore. I have no idea what their hoops are like now, so I would not recommend them.

PSI hoops are great...Trish, Sophie and myself all have some.  PSI is more expensive, but the price takes into consideration that type of tubing and the number of lights.  The more lights, the more expensive.  Our hoops cost 225$ each, but we have about 18 lights (I think).   From what I can see, Trick concept makes good LED hoops.  I might be selling my PSI hoops, which are still in really good condition (I use them, but not on a consistant basis, mostly just at hoop jams and performing), myself, I would like to lighter LED hoops now.  I would order again from PSI because I can get it customed made (size and lights) and the bottom line is, they are great hoops!

Hey,

We are Friendly Fire from Toronto Canada.

We sell and promote the Fibre Optic and LED Hula Hoops from Light Up and Juggle.

We support & hoop with them 100% of the time.

They have come along way from what they once were.

They have went done in diameter, lost the rattle and added more protection to the circuit board for longer life of the Hoop.

We have them on sale for Christmas too!!!

Has anyone finished their research on LED hoops?  I am interested purchasing one.  Where did people end up buying their hoop from and what hoop did they buy?  Thank you.

Hey Teresa and Averyl and Robyn, I've been looking at www.Superhooper.org 's led hoops, and I might preorder one for when I go to HoopCon. If you're considering, if you order I can deliver it back to you.
I had heard people say that superhooper LED hoops rattle a lot (lights not in place securly inside the hoop..so they make noise)..not sure how they are now and if they have improved. I haven't read blogs lately, so I don't know what people are saying.
Hi. Just a note to say that I'm not crazy about my Trick Concepts hoop. It's unbalanced due to the weight of the battery and therefore hard to hoop well with.

here's a forum to check out discussions

I have an infinity-style collapsible hoop and was disappointed to find it won't fit in my suitcase. :( I am sure I could bring my hoop on the plane as is, or in a nice little hoop snuggie, but given the other luggage I have to carry (and how little I trust airplane baggage handlers), I'd rather not. But I hate going home for the holidays without my hoop to play with. :( I've been looking into Hoopnotica travel hoops that come apart into segments and was wondering if anyone has experience with this brand or style of hoop? Or if anyone has any advice about flying with hoops? Thanks in advance. :)
