So once you know you have a space, and some potential interest, how is it best to spread the word about your gathering? Throughout my learning curve, I've found that having multiple ways of communication is ideal, to ensure that you've covered all of your bases:
  • Announcements via social networks:
    • Twitter
    • HoopCity
    • Tribe
  • Cross-posting to other community mailing lists
  • Newsletters (In Boston, I ask Marria Grace, who sends out the Boston Hoop Troop e-newsletter, to include the meetup information periodically)
  • Face-to-face networking on the spot, or at other spin events
  • Flyers

Initially I began with a Facebook group (Boston Hoop Meetup) so that people could find out about times & places for jams, but also so they could connect with each other.  So far, it's been pretty successful, but I still don't think it reaches everyone, which got me thinking about other ways to connect with people.

Case in point:  I've met a few more Boston area hoopers here on HoopCity who I did not know yet.  It's almost ironic that we've met on the internet but not in person!  Glad I was able to catch a few more of you here :)

And though some of us are on Twitter, I haven't quite figured out how best to take advantage of that system yet, nor have I ever tried posting physical flyers in key locations...

Ideas? Thoughts? Advice?  I'd love to hear from everyone on what modes of communication have worked for you.

I would think maybe local weekly farmer's markets or flea marts where you could rent out a space, maybe take turns manning it in the busiest season (when it's warmer, for example), and just bringing hoops and rocking out in your booth. Bring hoops for people to buy and play with, and then distribute your flyers there.
Thanks Swivel, I knew I left something out! Of course, physical flyers can never hurt. I seem to remember someone suggesting that to me before, but I never followed through with it. Perhaps I can muster up some support again this spring.

Interestingly, a friend just messaged me a few days ago and asked if I'd like to participate in a community 'zine, to act as a physical, tangible resource for people to find out about events in the Boston area. What I took away from this suggestion was the fact that it's still very important to have visible, real reminders of things, despite the fact that so many people now communicate in a virtual world. I am very excited to see this idea develop, and I'll be sure to keep everyone posted on its progress. Certainly the weekly hoop jams could be one of the many events listed.
this is what im hoping to do within the next couple of months. i think our farmer's market starts in may here so i have a little bit of time to get some supplies together. a good place to get groups started is meetup.com. if this farmer's market idea doesnt work, im going to try that... or maybe both!!
We've had good luck hooping at farmer's markets too. I've also had good luck creating Facebook events and sending out reminders that the event is coming up. Meetup.com is another good idea for organizing gatherings. I also think posting flyers in natural food stores and coffee shops would work well.

I'm currently in the process of creating a hoop jam in my local town. These are the ways I advertised/publicized/got the word out, along with a few other suggestions:

Social Networks:
Facebook
Myspace
Hoopcity
Twitter

Places to hang flyers:
Local gyms, fitness centers, yoga centers, and our local YMCA
Local organic food stores, health food stores
Local hippie clothing stores
Local dance studios, martial arts centers, yoga centers
Local spa, beauty salons, nail salons, tanning salons (which all have heavy female traffic)
Local college campuses

Others:
Craigslist
Radio stations
Local newspapers
There are also forums on Hooping.org

Hey Princess Hula!

I founded a group in Richmond, Va, called the RVA HoOp LOvers, and I agree that communicating on as many social sites as possible is the best way to get the word out.  Along with several of the sites you mentioned, I also use MeetUp.com.  It's not free to use as a facilitator but it has proven to be a great way to find other hoopers, register meetups, including classes and workshops, and gives you the ability to send messages out to your member base.  I love meetup and started using it along with Tribe.net in 2007 to gather hoopers....it's been an awesome tool!
