Hi lovely hoopers,

With spring just around the corner here in Boston, I'm starting to think about how to get hoopers here back in gear and coming to the park!  I'm very excited to come out of hibernation.

Since a new park season is almost upon us, I've been thinking about my lessons learned from last year and what I can do this year to better facilitate group interactions.  To make sure that expectations are met, I've decided to develop some "guidelines" for the formal meet-ups.  Here's what I'm thinking:

-All are welcome. I want this to be a place where anyone, new or experienced, feels welcome.  Therefore, I will be encouraging members to bring spin toys to share with curious bystanders.  I want to ensure that everyone has an open attitude.

-Skill sharing vs. personal practice.  Meet-ups should be a place where we can learn from each other, but also a place for individual practice.  In that respect, no one should be charging for their time/knowledge; it's a give and take environment. However, we do need to strike a balance between sharing skills without more advanced hoopers feeling like they're teaching a class.  How can I convey this idea effectively?

-Vending.  What are others' policies on vending at meet-ups?  I'm on the fence about whether there is a place for vending at this type of gathering.  On the one hand, there might be new people who want to buy a hoop.  On the other, I don't want the meet-ups to turn into a competitive environment where everyone is vying for customers.  And I certainly don't want newcomers to feel pressured to make a purchase just because they wanted to indulge their curiosity.

-Weather policy.  I know Beth mentioned the importance of consistency in another thread, and encouraged us to keep meet-ups going as often as possible.  I think we might say something like "unless it's a downpour, we'll be there!"  Because really, who wants to hoop in the rain? ;)

Any thoughts?  Advice?  I'd be glad to hear it!

I'd really love to hear what you've learned along these lines this year. I've been contemplating similar things... here's some of what I have...

- With regard to advanced students feeling like they're teaching a class...that's their choice, and good practice for when they want to teach on their own. I've been trying to spread out the teaching duty so it's not just 2 or 3 of us teaching everyone, but learning from someone slightly more advanced. I've been personally asking others (esp former students) to step up and talk to strangers and teach what they know. Giving more advanced hoopers the encouragement to teach is new type of encouragement and helps my flow.

- Someone at hoopcon mentioned a rule their bellydance jam has... once you learn a trick, you have to teach it to someone before you can learn another. I haven't put this into action in our jams, she said it worked very well for them, cause teaching a trick really cements the knowledge and gives an appreciation for the effort in teaching

- we had a 'STFU and Spin' hour at a spin jam and that worked pretty well. That jam ran 3 hrs a week and 1 hour was loud music, no talking. It worked well to get people focused and less chatty chatty chatty

- weather... we've had an awesome summer for heat, so even when it rains it clears up fast, and it's not that cold. I love hooping in the rain! For regular events it's nice to be about to say 'rain or shine'... I try to avoid creating doubt about whether or not jam is happening
