Hi everyone. I have a big question...how does one start a hoop community?  My boyfriend and I have recently moved from our home of many many years where the hooping community flourishes...and darn it, I felt like I was just getting started there. All things for a reason I suppose.

Anyway, we had a plan to move out to this other town, way across the country and there are many hoopers on HoopCity from that town too - Knowing that made the idea of moving a little easier. Well the universe let us know that wasn't meant to be and we've actually ended up in the hometown he was born and raised in. It is beautiful here. The weather is nice and the landscape is spectacular.

I don't take change easy sometimes and a big downside for me is there doesn't seem to be any hoopers here at all...I've searched for classes, jams, anything and no one seems to know what I'm talking about.

Community is important to me, and while I don't know if I'm the leader type, I would like to start something. I've toiled with the idea of being a hoop teacher, but I don't know if I'm good enough for that yet. Does anyone have any ideas? I miss my hoop group back home, and feel alone without anyone to hoop with.... but this may be one of my life lessons....how to gain confidence, get involved and maybe learn more about happiness....

sigh...Had a rough day - any ideas would be wonderful...

Yay! I am so happy for you Sheena that things are working out so well.  Keep us posted on how it goes over the summer. :)

I'm trying to start a tighter knit hoop community where I am too—and I'm not even in the middle of nowhere. There's already a pretty decent hoop community in Washington DC but everything they do is in the city or just outside of it and it's often way to hard for me to get there on a weeknight and even sometimes on a weekend.

The Meetup groups for hoopers near me are pretty much just class listings. There's rarely ever hoop jams or other events for hoopers to go to that aren't beginner hooping classes. The one group closest to me seems to be starting to do more jams but it's slow going.

I've been bringing my hoops everywhere. There are weekly concerts on Friday nights in the town I'm going to start teaching hooping in so I bring my hoops there (even broke out the LED last week). I've hooped in the middle of the town square in the middle of a weekday. I've brought my hoops to all the local festivals, and plan to do more of this throughout the summer to spread the word. I'm going to start teaching at the community center in my area in September. So I've started using their gym to do my own practices in to expose other members to it and get some interest.

The next step for me, I think, is to schedule hoop jams and start posting info about them. I'm the editor of the local community news outlet, so I've got lots of access to getting that info out there, I've just been so busy I haven't gotten around to this step yet. I think maybe next week I'll try to do something.

I'm anxious about being a teacher and a leader too, but this is something I love and want to share so I'm going to push myself to do it. I think it'll be good for me and my overall personal development. I'm hoping the confidence and excitement I feel for hooping will push me further in other areas of life too.

Hi Tilly,

Thanks for sharing your journey here. It's nice to hear what other people go through. One can feed off that, get inspired. Anyone who can motivate themselves to be a leader is amazing. I don't think I have a natural knack for that, or maybe I do and have just depended on others, so you're right, something like this is great for overall personal development.

And you said something that is a great idea -- Bring your hoops everywhere! That's how people start talking :)
