Fostering Hoop Communities

Welcome!

Hi Hoopers,

Since the group description limited what I could say, I wanted to explain a little more what I envision this group's purpose to be. I started this group because I am very interested in the idea of how to keep communities going strong. Recently I have been working on this exact task in my area, and wish that I had this type of resource to refer to when I started out.

With my increasing involvement in the Boston hoop community over the past year, I discovered that our community is very special, and wanted to contribute to its continuity and growth. The first thing I did to work towards my goal was to start organizing weekly meet ups in the park, which I offered to take the lead on for 2009.

At the time I was happy and excited to take on this task, but did not realize how many factors there are to consider when trying to attain "critical mass" for such events.

So here we are! I hope that we can use our collective knowledge to help others get a hoop jam started in their area, get others involved in hooping, suggest ideas for community activities, and lastly, leverage our members to create a positive impact that extends beyond our favorite circle.

Happy hooping!
Rachel

I just wanted to share this -- yesterday I hooped with a real live person (who also knows how to hoop -- my 5 year old niece doesn't quite cut it for community)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I found her by searching something like "spinners" or "fire spinners" and my town on Facebook, and I came up with a performance group's page. I became a fan, left a comment or a message, and then didn't hear from them for a month. Then a few weeks ago a poi spinner messaged me back, and yesterday we met at her house for a little jam!! AND she has a fire hoop that, once fixed, she'll let me try. AND I even taught her a trick!! AND we're starting a regular jam session on Saturdays for us and the few other spinner-types in our town, and going out to a public park to see if we can drum up more interest!!!! This is SUCH a success for me, since I am insecure personally and in my hoop skills. Be bold, folks, because it pays off, apparently! :D

WOW! In the 24 hours since I started this group, we already have 32 members! I'm so glad that there is interest in this topic area. I'm trying to come up with more discussion ideas (while at my day job, haha), but if anyone has one, by all means, feel free to start one!

Betherann, what's funny is I actually found the BEST group in my area to hoop with are not all hoopers. They spin all sorts of flow toys, poi, staff, clubs, spheres, etc. The thing that made all the difference to me was that everyone in this particular group is obsessed with flow, and that really matters to me. Maybe try looking outside the circle. ;)

Jessica, I was just thinking about this the other day, but from the opposite standpoint. I love hooping, but I'm the lone hooper in my city as far as I can tell. Outside of my freshly started kids group, I can't find anyone. I know there are fire spinners, but they seem to have disappeared with the coming of winter. I'll try to find 'em in the spring, but for now it's just me and the rather abstract community of this site. I found myself thinking while hooping -- "How awesome is this! And how much MORE awesome it would be if I could do it with somebody else..."

One day! and hopefully one day soon...

Thanks for starting this group! It's funny how big an impact having a community makes on my hooping. I always feel like I tap into it best when I'm hooping with others that share my passion!
