Hi!

It's so much fun with an exercise that both challenge your coordination, balance, endurance, flexibility, cardiovascular system and makes you laugh!!! I also enjoy that there is always more to learn, a new trick, different order of tricks.  It is something for both body, mind and soul. Cant' wait to learn more! But I guess I have to work as well...

HiYa - Ali-Hoop here :)

Iv been hooping for about a year now and LOVE it.  It has been a great supplimental excercise to my dailey routine. I love that I can hoop both inside and outside (outside being my favorite). I am looking forward to meeting more healthy minded hoopers here :)

Hi folks,

I'm on hold on the telephone and thought I'd take a spin around Hoop City, since I haven't in some time.

I fell in love with hooping last summer, and I noticed changes in my body almost immediately.  This is the first *exercise* (I don't even like to call it that) that has thrilled me so much that I do it because I want to whenever I can.  I ALWAYS want to hoop.  My body loves it.  I'm also working on my yoga teacher training certification, and I adore yoga, but it is a completely different thing.  I often think of yoga as my medicine and hooping as my candy and playtime.

Right now I am having some fear around some abnormal mammograms.  I DO have a tendency toward a bit of hypocondriosis, but I'm pretty sure something is actually wrong this time...  There was a time in my life when I would have been consumed with fear...and probably anger at my body too, but hooping has helped me so much.  When I feel myself getting scared, I put myself in my hoop (or grab my minis)....My time in the hoop reaffirms my health and strength, lightens my heart, and gets me out of body fear and into body joy....

rambling a bit.

I cannot wait to get back into shape and love my body once again!! I have been so busy with everything I have been a real slacker!! I have been hooping nonstop the past week, and have been reconnected with such a passion.  Hoopdance is definetely a start in the right direction!!

Ive been hooping for a few years and was a pro ballet dancer for many, only in the last year now have I taken real steps towards becoming healthier and yes as soyboy said it is a case of little steps, I am now at a place where I can concentrate on being completely within my hoop when I am spinning, totally absorbed and connected to myself as I know my body is doing a good job :)

Its a slow process, but making the best decision in every moment is what helps me the most. :)
Aurora of Elemental Hoops Comment by Aurora of Elemental Hoops on November 9, 2010 at 11:13am
soyboy, that helped SO MUCH. i'm a work in progress and i have slowly got better but like you said its not a race. i really appreciate you writing that long comment.

i was actually looking up healthier recipes today and i found this great one for soup with a lot of veggies so we'll see how that goes :)

Huh... thanks soyboy. Your comment actually is some good advice. I'm in the process of those small steps of change.
soyboy Comment by soyboy on November 9, 2010 at 10:34am
Neither did I! I grew up obese. I was on a steady diet of bacon double cheeseburgers, curly fries and oreo milkshakes at roy rogers (it's a fast food chain). I became vegan and still ate junk food. It took me many years to change my habits and I'm still a work in progress, but now I LOVE veggies!

I think part of it is sincerely wanting to change and become healthier. "Seek change and you will see results. Seek results and you will see nothing". I forget where I read that but it's a good philosophy I think. What worked for me is to start to re-associate my foods. Sweets, candy, soda, pizza and junk food were poor choices. Fresh vegetables, healthy proteins, and water were good choices. I hated almost all veggies but I convinced myself that I SHOULD like them. So I ate them. I convinced myself that I SHOULDN'T be eating the junk food. Every time I ate I started to associate feelings with the food. It's not really healthy to judge food as "good" or "bad", because that's exactly the type of thinking that leads to eating disorders. But when applied carefully, it can be useful. I'd feel guilty eating poorly and great eating well. So these were the steps - and mind you, none of this was conscious or deliberate, I just sort of figured it out along the way:
1- I ate more of the veggies I could stomach, like corn, potatoes (NOT FRIES!), onions, apples, and other fruits.
2- I started "hiding" better veggies into foods I cooked so I wouldn't taste them. Chopped carrots in my soup, chopped kale in my pasta sauce, frozen fruit in my smoothies. I'd help disguise the taste with garlic or ginger for savories, or agave and vanilla extract for sweeter things.
3- Every meal had to have veggies. I started with just one meal per day, and after a few months I made sure there was a little in 2 meals, etc.

4-I started eating more salad. I made the salad big with lots of yummy stuff like orange or grapefruit slices, toasted walnuts, or sunflower seeds. And protein to make it filling. I like using Tofurkey sausage, or soy chick'n strips.

It's a long process, but guess what? Life's not a race. You have lots of time to make these changes. Make them gradually, and you won't even notice it. :-)

Hope that helps!
