Hoopers in Hawaii

I noticed there is a serious lack of Hawaii love on Hoop City. I am hoping as the hooping community in Hawaii grows, so will this group! There are quite a few who live on the outer islands, but we have very few on Oahu. I hope I can help change that!

I made a hoopcity event for the weekly firejam in Honolulu. http://www.hoopcity.ca/events/honolulu-fire-jam

If you don't know, you should go!

Oh, I wish you were coming to Oahu too! There's a great hooper named Kisha on Maui, you can find her on Facebook through her hoop business name Hoopnatyze. I haven't met her yet, but some of my girls met up with her at HoopCamp. I'm sure she would love to get down with you! Over on Oahu, we're all big fans of Babz, especially all the unique (and daring!) tricks you come up with. Maybe we'll have to make a trip over to Maui for the day to visit!

Hello Ladies, I am heading back to Hawaii in September for two weeks.  Hopefully I will be able to attend a Saturday night hoop jam.  Teresa

There's also a fire jam on Thursday nights that I try to attend. You can facebook Hawaii Fire Artists for more info. They have a DJ and there are really talented performers who perform at the Burn every year. So there are other opportunities out there.

As for dance, I know a little. Shakti Dance Movement is my favorite, they're more fusion than traditional. Bellydancers in Paradise are really traditional. Willow Chang is an AMAZING performer who does both. She's probably been around doing it in Hawaii the longest. Shakti are awesome too, they hosted Beats Antique and performed with Zoe Jakes on stage.

Here's a website for a new dance yoga and meditation studio in down: http://www.stillandmovingcenter.com/home.html They have bharatanatyam, but i dont know any other indian dancing classes.

Thanks Alli!

Most likely I will end up working on Saturdays too, but hopefully I can make it to a few jams now and then :)

Do you know of any good dance studios in the Honolulu/Manoa area? Specifically I'm looking for bellydance (any style), bollywood and bhangra classes.

We do still meet at 5 pm on Saturdays on Magic Island at Ala Moana Beach Park. If you need help finding it once you get here, feel free to contact me. I don't make it out to most of them due to work, however my wonderful friends are usually there. They have a FB page that offers updates like if they wont be there due to weather or a performance. If you're on FB, you should look up HulaCoop's

Hi all!

I just joined your group as I will be moving to Hawai'i in a few days. I will be working on a farm for a month before I start school at UHM. Do you all still meet on Saturdays? I'm looking forward to meeting the beautiful Hawai'i Hoop Community!

Hey LadyThrottle, I can't quite identify with your situation, because I grew up here, but only because my parents moved here from Illinois when I was a baby. I lived in Wisconsin for a many years, and recently moved back, and I'm living with my parents. Some of my hooper friends here are transplants from the mainland, so you're certainly not alone. It's certainly an adjustment, and some sacrifices must be made when living out on an island in the middle of the ocean, but its totally worth it. Even if you only live here a few years and move back to the mainland, it will be an experience you will never forget. I hope it all works out for you!
