We are honored to be asked to bring our 14-day Feb challenge to Hoop City as the February Monthly Hooping Challenge. Thank you SaFire and this entire community!! We hope all the beautiful hoopers here will connect with this intention and rock out old with some big hoops this month :) ~the Spin Summit

Practice with INTENTION!

Intention setting during practice is a collective idea that the Spin Summit is excited to facilitate.

HERE'S THE SPIN...

Every month, set an intention to welcome into your spin practice. We invite you to explore the challenge in your flow. Set your goal to spin 14 days out of the month. If you get to the end of the 14 days, try the challenge in your non-dominant flow for the remainder of the month.

We encourage participating in this challenge personally, with a friend, with family, with your local and global community.

Journaling your practice and documenting video (for personal use or to share) can be beneficial to the learning process. Upload progress, feedback, or video to share with the other spin summiters.

Open your mind and body to new movement and exploration!

***FEBRUARY PRACTICE CHALLENGE:***

INTENTION: Back to basics
Exploring your foundation root system is an exciting voyage challenge. This means using your beginning prop, going back to the basic moves, and rediscovering why you fell in love with spin... this challenge will be different for every one of us.

BACKGROUND:
For every skill level, we all have had beginner hats on while spinning our prop. We invite you to explore the root system of your dance and movement with your prop partner.

HOOP CHALLENGE:
Use a beginner hoop. For most of us, a beginner hoop means a large (40"+ outer diameter) hoop, made from ¾” or 1" black tubing. Explore and focus on the movements that first got you hooping.

POI CHALLENGE:
Pull out that original set of practice poi you started with. Explore and focus on the movements that first got you spinning.

OTHER PROPS:
Focus on the fundamental movements and deepen the strength of your root system!

Interesting challenge!!  I like it...
Definitely interesting - especially for me.  Despite having been hooping for 9 months, I often feel like I haven't progressed much past the beginner stage!  LOL!  I'll need to look back and see what moves I worked on at the beginning of my hoop journey.
For me.... this has been really fun and beneficial so far. I pulled out my first hoop (the mama monster.... 1" black tubing) and have been giving her a little love each day.

Some interesting observations are starting to develop in my practices with this intention....
1. Props to myself of the past for learning shoulder and knee hooping with this heavy hoop. How did I do that? It feels like shoulder hooping and knee hooping with this one inch hoop is more challenging from the added weight and gravity?
2. Moves like waist hooping and angles are fun in this hoop and my body is feeling it a lot more!
3. I am way more conscious with this hoop (more so than my smaller hoops) of gripping the hoop so I don't let it go.... this heavy hoop could cause some real damage in my living room. I move much slower too...
4. I feel a lot stronger and graceful using this hoop now than when I started.... it sure is heavy, but now I have more strength and understanding to tame the beast.
5. I giggle a lot when I use it. I mean, a lot. I don't remember giggling this much when she was my daily hoop.
6. I realize how different my style is now than when I started and how much I've evolved as a hooper. I'm really enjoying staying in the intention of so many of the on-body skills I started with. I'm flooded with memories of the marvelous journey that started with this hoop.
7. I find myself falling into old-habits (mostly positive). I've been aware of using similar music to what I used when I started hooping (mostly grateful dead & bluegrass) and hooping in the room I used to hoop in all the time. It feels good.
8. I'm inspired to pull out video footage of myself at a few weeks into hooping and compare to video of me with the same hoop now.

I wonder if others are having similar observations and experiences... or what being in your original hoop has been like for you...

I am in! :) Ya Glad we have a challange this month! I am currently doing a 30/30 with my hoop teens...but I need this for mybody right now...the only thing is I have big muscular arms as it is already! So i am scared to make them bigger!!!??? and gooing back to my 41 3/4 160....where i learned my isolations...eeekkkI got me some muscles!

Anyway...I am up for this one :)

its ok if im late ...right :)
Absolutely... welcome... we are excited that you're participating :)

I understand the gripping thing..I am late o nstarting this challage...but I had to do it anyway,,,I dropped my big girl a few times today just because of the weight and like...hitting the floor...that and my hands are super sore!!!!!!

Vertical hooping is much easier...slower...cant wait to try my oppiset flow..I will probably grow my chest and shoulder hooping! because at this moment...I do not go against the grain:) up there!

Love this challenge...especially after winter! Gonna Lose that winter weight~

PEACE!

Ok I decided to do my first blog ever on this...if you wanna read go for it...if not :) thats kool too!

I'm late to the party too! But better late than never! Sometimes I have trouble loading up this website, maybe it's just me. Anyway, I got out the biggest "indoor" hoop I have (all the others are outside, very cold & wet in Seattle right now - not too appealing!), put on a hoopjam playlist I made a couple years ago, and just started waisthooping. My body has changed a little since my beginner days in 2005 - I just got my navel pierced! So I have that to contend with. And somehow I just seem to automatically, when a certain type of musical change happens, just want to grab the hoop, flip it up over my head, & start hand hooping! But since I really don't have much room for that, I bring it back down, below my waist at the hips, or above at the chest, moving arms in & out to the music. It's fun! I close my eyes & try to imagine what it was like that first time. I'll try to get 14 sessions in before the end of the month, since I don't have 14 days! And I still need to get my poi out again - it's been a little while.
Very good idea. Especially since I haven't used my first hoop in a while. I've been so focused on getting better, faster, lighter, that I haven't even bother with my larger hoops.
