Melissa - That is certainly something to think about and I will keep that in mind as I begin learning hooping and for if I ever decide to do it in a more public setting. Can you tell me more about your devotional/intercessory hooping and how you go about it?

Traci - That's an interesting way to look at this; I never really thought to see it that way. Thanks for the input!

honeychile - Congrats on your weight loss; that must have been a lot of hard work. But with God's help anything is possible, right? I have actually heard of Setting Captives Free, before...but I've never known anyone that has gone through any of their courses. I went to your website and read more about it and that's pretty cool. Guess I never thought hooping could turn into such a good opportunity to evangelize!

I'm liking what I'm reading. Great comments guys!

Even though in its original text, it spoke of whether Christians had liberty to eat certain things, I believe 1 Corinthians 10:31 in its larger context applies to everyday life as well.  It is a favorite of mine because it points out that everything we do is important and can bring glory to God. It is the "theme verse" for a Bible study on overeating called the Lord's Table.  Using the Bible study to get my head on straight and the hoop to help me exercise consistently, God helped me to lose 100 lbs and use the hoop for exercise and an evangelism tool.  You can read more here: http://justbeeme.com/hooping4him.html  Thanks for the comment, Melissa!

Great comments, Melissa. I'd add this - Jesus said we must come to him like children - with a  childlike faith that trusts God without overanalyzing everything. I think the same applies to our hooping: if we approach it like kids do - as a fun thing to do, without any complicated or "mature" motivations - we will attract the kind of attention that allows us to give God the glory for what He's done in our lives.

The verse itself is referring to a question of etiquette vs heart motivations when eating at other's places.

As for applying this to hooping, when you hoop, especially in public places, you may want to check your heart motivations.

It's easy to slip into pride and other things when you practice so hard to perfect your technique. Our sport is very noticeable  and when in public, you will get tons of comments, complements, and everything else.

Because of how some people think of certain movements, attire, etc associated with our sport, it's more important than ever to dress, and act in a way that does not cause other people to stumble AND honors the King.

I myself am a devotional/intercessory hooper, and am lucky to have a church that allows me to bring my hoops with me to service. But in a Christian setting, there is a fine line between cutting loose in a service and using your freedom in Christ, and being mindful of the needs and perceptions of other worshipers around you. For instance, I do mostly off-body tricks in service, and I hoop in the back, in order to minimize distractions.

Bottom line, everything we do must be motivated by love and respect for others and God

Hi Traci and Melissa. Thanks for the welcome! It's cool to find a Christian hooping group. :)

So I sort of have a question for everyone here...

It relates to 1 Corinthians 10:31; it is a verse that has challenged me in my daily walk with God and I am curious about how I might apply this verse to hooping. What are your thoughts?

I'd like to welcome new hooper Stephanie to the group. It's always great to have new hooping christian friends :-)

Hi, Stefanie! Welcome to the group. I agree; it's been quiet around here lately. We're glad to have you with us. :)

Hey everyone! I'm new here and also new to hooping (waiting for what I've ordered to begin, to arrive). I see there hasn't been much activity here in a few months, but I'm hoping to connect with some other Christian hoopers. :)
