Hey Cindyhoopwithme !
Age takes a lot of the blame but itis not always so. Im 51 and my hips were hurting too after wards ..I started doing joint -mobility exercises with Scott Sonnon , got his cds and no more hiphurt or any hurt for that matter ( unless I do a 3 hr hoop workout )! You have to get rid of the acid -lactic in the muscles once you are done with the hooping or whatever exercise you do, and all of these exercises help rid you of such juices and promote joint oiling and flexibility ,,and that is just the beginning ! Unless you have arthrosis or some kind of rhumatism or something else ...joint mobility is the way to go after a good workout..Check him out on you tube . You have demos of his cds on line....make sure to type` joint- mobility`.15 min. a day and before bed is the best and you wake up with no pain. Mind you it worked for me...
Bonjour !
Gigi
When I first started hooping I had sore hips a few times, but the pain eventually subsided. I'm 44 and overweight, so I'm sure that had a good bit to do with it. ;)

Gina, great tip about the joint mobility exercises. I'll have to check those out.
LOL! I hate to say it, but maybe! You're not alone. I have a chronic back problem (3 disks prone to bulging in my lower back if I don't take care of it), and I notice that when I hoop a lot (like an hour a day or more), my back expresses it's irritation at that! I have to limit long hooping sessions and fill in with little short sessions here and there or work on off body hooping where I don't use my back so much. I also make sure to stretch religiously (especially my back) before and after a hoop session. If you're not doing it already, you may want to do the same, paying particular attention to your hips.

I also noticed some soreness and stifness in my wrists and elbows after intense hoop session, so I've taken to stretching those areas as well. I'm a life-long fitness devotee and am in good shape. It doesn't make me immune.

I think it's inescapable, no matter how well we take care of ourselves, that age is going to take it's toll. It's just that if we're diligent about treating our bodies with respect, we can substantially slow down the effects of aging. Of course, it's not always age-related. Hoopers at any age can develop injuries and problems from hooping (or any activity). I think over-use injuries would be common, and my advice to younger hoopers would be to make sure to take steps to prevent those problems now before age makes them worse.

Of course we should never stop hooping! Just start listening to our bodies!!
well im glad im not alone! im definitly going to try the joint mobility! thanks for the advise!
Hi hoopyfolk, I've just explored some radical (to me) therapeutic yoga that really loosened up the hips, pelvis and lower back. It was rolling on a ball - literally - and I'm just in love with how it eases my hips! I got a regular playground ball and deflated it quite a bit, then followed some of www.yamunabodyrolling.com videos, after taking some specialized classes with a yoga teacher I respect. I've been bodyrolling after I hoop, and I know it's really helping. So easy, so fun, so accessible. Like hooping. Happy hips to you all!
I just turned 49.  I am over weight, have problems with my neck, hips, left knee, I have weak ankles & poor balance.  But since I started hooping 2 months ago I dont notice them as much.  I think it is because I have my endorphines going sky high! I have lost allot of weight steadily. Since I had knee surgery about 6 years ago I started taking joint supplements.  I also make sure I take my multi vitamin, increased my potassium & increased my fluid intake.  Since then I have had less problems with my joints, pinched nerves & muscle cramps.  One of my favorites is the "G series Gatorade"  I take ritual bubble baths every night too with Epsom salts.  Now if I could just get to bed on time.  That is my biggest down fall right now, not enough sleep.  Silly me!

Happy birthday, Mootie!  I'll be 46 in two months and two weeks (December 18).  I celebrated my 45th birthday with a hoop jam, and it was a blast - best birthday ever!

Great tips on the joint supplements and potassium.  I don't have a lot of joint problems, but my neck bothers me sometimes after a session if I've been neck hooping in my first current too much.  I'm working on evening out my time in first and second current.  It's tough, though; I just want to flow and play, and I have to remember hoopdancing is also a workout that needs to be done properly.  That means hooping both directions.

Why thank you Traci "CircularPraise" Bonney.   I had a very Hoopy Birthday.  My daughter and I went to my Hoop Dance Fusion class together, it was her first one.  Then lunch, then to her local park to hoop some more.  She took a video of me after class where the class cheered me on, that's where my new pic is from and I took a video of her at the park.  I am just waiting for her to share so I can post here and on Youtube.  Our first video was hilarious, we just started hooping 2 months ago.

My neck has gotten alittle sore too from some of my clumsy manuevers so I bought a new neck pillow recently for only $20.00, it has been helping so much!  Yeah your right I guess we have to gauge ourselves and the best way is to listen to our body.  And hooping both directions too.  I have to tell you, I found your videos about two weeks ago, you are so amazing, I cant wait til I am as good as you!  Not only do you make it look easy but it is so obvious your love for hooping.

Thank you! I appreciate your kind words more than my own words can express. :)
You are so welcome! :)
I have one more thing to say on this subject and that is I truly dont mind the bumps, bruises, broken nails, broken figurines and such because I am doing something that I love.  Before hooping I was steadily gaining weight and my health problems mostly pain related were stacking up.  For the past 18 months before I started hooping I was struggling with chronic pain in my left side and had been tested' poked and prodded for every possible ailment.   I saw so many specialists in every area of medicine.  They never did find out what was wrong.  Well I am happy to say that since I began hooping 2 months ago that pain which I can barely describe how awful it was, is GONE!  So not only has hooping been the best weight loss and fountain of youth but it has also been my miracle too, LOVE IT, Love It, love it!
