I thought that there should be a place to talk about any sort of stories associated with our kids - you know, when you are just itching to share something - either a cute story, a wonderful accomplishment, a moment of startling revelation...

So last night Nikolas (who is 4.75) is climbing up at the kitchen sink to get down a water bottle, and, when trying to get down, has a moment of panic. He calls to his brother Erik (who is also 4.75) to help him (notably, NOT to me, who is standing just a few feet away). Erik runs and gets the stool, puts it just beneath Nikolas's feet, and says, "Okay, come down along my hands, I'll guide you to the stool" to which Nikolas replies "No, Erik, I gotta do it a cooler way. Get your shoulders under me, and then I will get down onto your shoulders..."

And that is exactly what they did. Erik stood under Nikolas's shoulders, Nikolas lowered himself onto Erik's shoulders and Erik crouched down until Nikolas's feet were on the floor. Well, at least they did it the "cool" way! heh.
lol... How fun! They sound very adventurous!
When my daughter was just starting potty training, I was changing her clothes. She was wiggling everywhere, so I said, "Abby, please focus." She slips from my arms and runs down the hall naked singing, "You can't focus me!!!!"

We're journeying to our first multi-day festival today--Wakarusa. So hopefully I'll return with many fun and funny (rather than disastrous) stories. Wish me luck!
That is too cute!!! Enjoy the festival!
Love this thread! LOVE IT!

My funny story for this week, at least, starts with Lil (who is almost 6, and very gregarious and fun) and I on a longish car ride. She is happily babbling away in the back seat, yammering about anything and everything. She's talking about everything she's going to do when she grows up. Suddenly she stops and very earnestly tells me "Mom, when I grow up I want to have a baby. If its a girl, I'll name her Crystal. And if its a boy, I'll name him Spiderman."

I nearly spit my drink all over the steering wheel. That's my girl!
Wow. Is she into superheroes, or what?!
lol... When I asked her about it, she said that most boys she knows are into that kind of thing, so she thought a little boy would really like that name. I said that was very thoughtful and told her that I thought it'd be much better choice than naming her son "Spongebob Squarepants". She laughed.
So cute! My son LOVES to wear his Spiderman suit.
This isn't really funny, but so charming and lovely! My 9 year old Ewan has learning difficulties and some communication issues, so I sometimes feel I can't reach him, or connect with him. He is usually playing a character or reciting something he has heard on a video or a dvd, or just drawing in silence.

I had recently decided to collect all the stones on my allotment so Ewan and I were sitting together with a bucket each, picking out the stones from the soil. We sat there a while, and Ewan just started talking. I mean, truly talking, about what he actually THINKS. He told me that he wonders why lava is red, and not green or purple, and why plants are usually green. He wonders if there was ever another Ewan, who lived his life out in the same way, or a different way. He thinks about whether when he looks at the stars, some tiny kid is looking up from another planet at the Earth. He wonders what the animals are actually saying to each other when they mew, bark, squeak, etc. and whether the birds are singing about love, God, or just a nice tune. He also wonders if the universe has a brain and can think, and if it knows things, or if the earth feels loney and needs a friend.

This was an amazing and special moment for me, I got a rare and beautiful insight into this wonderful intelligent little mind. He may not be academic, but he is certainly a very deep thinker!

Oh and he learnt to tie shoelaces this week! BOAST BOAST :-)
Awww... *melt*
Hi Liz,

I teach dance to kids that have disabilities. I really love the kids that have Autism - they sound a bit like your son. They have amazing minds but have a hard time connecting with people. The best part about autism is that everytime you connect with them (like you did) you open up their universe and they improve. Ewan is lucky to have a mom like you who takes the time to listen when he's ready to open up.

Are you familiar with the song "The Kid" by Buddy Mondlock? -- If you don't have it - please get it. It's a song about dreamers... here's an excerpt:

"I'm the kid who always looked out the windows
Failing tests in geography
But I've seen things far beyond just the school yard
Distant shores of exotic lands....

I'm the kid who has this habit of dreaming
Sometimes gets me in trouble too
But the truth is I could no more stop dreaming
Than I could make them all come true"

Without dreamers we wouldn't have artists, philosphers, poets, film-makers, hoopers : ) -- etc.

Ewan is a wise thoughtful soul.

I loved your story.

Cara
That is a WONDERFUL boast (both the tying shoes, and the peek into the inner workings of your son) - as well as an amazing connecting moment for the two of you!
