Hi Everyone!,

I just started hooping about a month ago. I love what it does for my mind and body so I've been doing it for about 45 minutes 5 times a week. While I do feel that I'm improving, I'm still a newbie. I'd love to attend HP5 but I feel like I may not bee good enough. I also don't know anybody that hoops, so going alone is a little intimidating. I was wondering if any of you have attended HP or other retreats when you were in a similar place in your hooping journey and how it turned out. Thanks!

Hi, I was a newbie when I wnt to HP3. I could waist hoop, lift it above my head and isolate... sorta... It was an amazing experience. Far better than I had anticipated and laid the groundwork for my curent hoop practice. As bax says. While the hoop path ultimately does create bad ass hoopers, more importantly it creates bad ass people... It's not trick focused, it's meditative and practice focused... I highly HIGLY recommend that you go. I would be if I did nto have to be teaching gifted high-schoolers at that time. This year sounds like it's going to be especially dope.

Sara, I am so glad that you started this thread. I second what Matthias wrote and I'd like to reassure you that if you are already loving what the hoop does for your mind and body, then you are ready for HP5. HoopPath is all about authenticity and expression, no matter where you are on your personal Path. We always have a fairly wide range of hoopdancers skill-wise and age-wise. What I love about the way that Baxter teaches is that it is accessible to everyone at every level. I've been hooping for about 8 or so years, attending HP classes since they began, and I still return to Baxter's Fundamentals class because there is so much still to learn. There is a richness and depth to Baxter's approach to movement that applies to every level of dancer. As Matthias said, HP is not so much about tricks as it is about learning about how you as an individual want to move. We definitely cover technique, and you will come away with some skills that will blow your mind. But think about it more as learning a new language. The Retreat is an opportunity to immerse yourself completely. You will be challenged and you will discover within yourself strengths and expression you might not have even know you had. It can be intimidating to go to a big gathering like this for ANYone. However, I hope that you will feel welcome to come and be exactly who you are, where you are at this moment in your hoop path, because you will leave much further down that path at the end of the weekend.

From what I recall when I was at HP3 - there were at least 2 there who had only hooped A FEW HOURS before!!  & they are still hooping. and they loved it & now I am sure they are hoop ninjas.
Oh my goodness...if HP5 is even a remote option for you...I vote...MAKE IT HAPPEN! You will be embraced by hoopers at every level, you need not be an expert, I assure you! Just the community involvement alone is worth the trip and you will be blown away at the warmth of your fellow hoopers. <3 Please join us...this will be my second year & I absolutely cannot WAIT to get back to my people!

Hi Sara!

I concur with what everyone else has said. I myself went to HP3 by myself, not knowing ANYONE, and I was welcomed with open arms by everyone I met. I also made some really good friends that I still keep in touch with. This will be my third year and I'm so excited. I hope you decide to go! All of the local Hoop Pathers are amazing and so down to earth and real!! I was not a pro either, but like many have said, it's not about tricks at all. If it was, I don't think I would feel such a connection to the HP. It really is about just being you and connecting with how YOU flow, and not about if you can do this thing or that thing. It's really such an enriching, spiritual experience not to be missed. Hope you come, and we get to hang out!

Peace,

Gypsy

Thanks everyone for your encouraging responses! I think the message is clear: go to HP! I'll put some of my anxiety aside and take the plunge. I'm sure it will be a ton of fun!

Well, I for one, will keep an extra sharp eye out for ya' & make dang sure you're enjoying yourself as much as humanly possible! You clearly have good decision making skills! :o) Can't wait to hear you say how HAPPY you are that you made this decision because I absolutely KNOW in my heart that you will be!

Let's hoop it up, girl!

Thanks so much Michelle! See you there!
PS. I made my attendance official by buying a ticket today!
Yay!!!!!
I'm also going to class tonight! I'm very excited (and nervous).
Sara, you'll be great! The HoopPathers are a pretty friendly bunch and I hope that you will feel absolutely welcome to come and just be yourself. Heads up: it's pretty warm so be prepared to sweat. If you have a bandana or a scarf and feel comfortable going in a blindfold, we might be doing some of that. Just know that where ever you are on your path is where you need to be. It's easy to feel intimidated going into a new classroom (I feel nervous every time!) I hope to be there and meet you.
