I'm a brand new mini hooper, and for the past week, since I started, I've been religiously practicing "drills." Forwards in same time, backward in same time, forwards in split time, backwards in split time, opposite in same time, blah, blah, blah. Mostly just trying to get the technique down and my planes good.

Today as I was practicing my drills, a song came on that made me feel like dancing. I was tired of practicing drills like a robot. So, I just rocked out. I did whatever I wanted and banged those minis around. I turned without following the rules, I flailed my arms all over, I didn't care if my planes were perfect. Yeah, the hoops banged together a lot, they flew off my hands and all over the room, they hit me in the face, legs, torso, toes! It was fun! And you know what? I think I learned just as much from goofing around with them than I did when I practice in a more regimented manner trying to keep the technique good. I think spending some time the last couple of days playing with spinning poi (which I just started on Friday to help me learn minis), just made me feel like not being so serious.

Anyone else ever just let loose with the minis and let the chips fall where they may?

GO GIRL!! i do the drills and watch the tutorials and try as hard as i can i cannot get a 3 beat weave ( it's my goal with poi and mini's) Having fun is where i started and then it went to skill development and now it is back to fun but with the skills i have developed. The BEST THING to do is watch kids. I actually teach kids poi and hoop and diabolo and juggling and they don't know the "Rules" and they have so much fun and loose track of the skills i was trying to teach them and then I try what they are doing!! Kids just feel it and do it and it is so freeing to watch them. it is inspirational to see an adult express the fun i have seen with my kids classes. Thank you for your story.
Aren't minis sooooo much fun!? I've been spinning minis for almost 3 months now and I have to say that I've played with them everyday since I made my first set. I got bored one day and decided I would make a set of minis just to see how I liked them and I honestly can't put them down. Sometimes I have to make myself put them down and take a shower or go to bed. I'm so addicted, hahaha. But I remember when I first started spinning minis, I just had no idea what to really do with them & they kept flying off my hands. But once I figured out how to spin them forwards and backwards, I just jammed out and had fun with them. I ended up teaching myself quite a bit of tricks by just messing around with them. After about a week, I bought Safire's minis class and my true love for mini hooping was born. Safire's tutorials are fantastic & I highly recommend them. Also, good thinking on practicing with a set of poi. I borrowed a set from a friend of mine that spins poi & they were very especially useful while trying to learn the 3 beat weave.
Best of luck to you with your minis! They're not easy to learn, but trust me, all those times of hitting yourself & all the tape marks on your walls will be worth it! :)
Thanks guys! Yep, there's definitely a place for practicing drills and working on really perfecting technique, but ya' gotta' just flow sometimes and let things happen. It puts the fun into it for sure!

I am in Sandra's Minis class (and some of her other classes), and I just love them!
