I would start with these fundamentals:
WAIST HOOPING (in both directions)
CHEST HOOPING (without your arms inside at first)
You could also begin to play around with hand work by trying to spin the hoop over your head.
And most of all - HAVE FUN! Learning can be really frustrating and also totally rewarding. Give yourself a break from the hoop if it gets to be too much.

And let me emphasize the word CHALLENGING! I actually threw my hoop across the gym floor after becoming so frustrated with knee hooping :P
But like everything, its just practice. There is really no other way to learn.

belly dance is kinda similar. it actually helps to isolate your core. also practice making a circle with your hips. have fun!
