I just started hooping and I am, to make a long story short, in lots of pain. My waist is sore, my hip bones are sore, my neck is sore, my hands are sore, my butt is sore, my leg is sore... I am enjoying hooping though and I don't want to stop because of the pain, but it does make it harder to hoop. Has anyone else experienced this? And if so, what do you do about it?

when i first started hooping, i was bruised all over! i had an especially huge bruise on my left hip. my hips hurt, especially my right (i am a left current hooper). my lower back was really sore too. but like you, i wasn't about to let the pain stop me! just take a day or two break. rest your body and don't overwork yourself. hooping is an exercise, so you need to account for that. make sure you stretch before and after you hoop, or as much as possible! the pain will go away as your muscles and joints get used to the hooping movements, but there are always those times when you'll be sore after a workout! you may even learn to appreciate the soreness.... ahh the pain of a satisfying hooping session!
Yasmin - Maybe take another day off and maybe ice your hip a few times throughout the next day. That should take care of it, but if not and it doesn't get better, then you maybe want to get it checked out. Sounds like maybe you just have a nasty, deep bruise.

Interestingly, just when I posted that I don't get DOMS (delayed onset muscle sorenss - the techy term for muscles sore from over-use or from being used in a way they're not accustomed to) from hooping, I got DOMS from hooping!! LOL! I've been practicing a routine to do for a progress video for my Seeding One (SaFire's on-line hoop classes) group. I practiced it for 90 min. on Saturday and another 45 on Sunday. Yesterday my quads were screaming at me! I tried to hoop but gave up after like 20 min. because my legs just weren't having it! I'm resting them again today because they are still a bit sore. Funny, I thought I was immune to DOMS from hooping, but I guess it goes to show that when you use the same muscles over and over and over again, they're gonna' get sore!

Hey, I have a HUGE bruise on my left hip too!!

I secretly love it though, they're battle scars!

I didn't have significant pain, but I did have bruising on my hips (like Kate, on the left especially, and I'm a left current hooper too) and hands. Other than a bit of muscle soreness in my abs, though, no muscle or joint pain. Do you regularly exercise? If not, it's probably just muscle soreness and stiffness and will ease up as your muscles become accostomed to what you're asking them to do. I have been a religious exerciser for years, so that probably explains why my muscles didn't get sore. Like Kate said, take it easy, take a day or two off if you need to and rest. Ibuprofen works great for easing sore muscles, and there are also balms and lotions designed to soothe them as well. Listen to your body! Remember that the soreness you're feeling is actually a good thing! It means you're developing stronger muscles!
i just want to echo what Kate said hooping is excercise even though it doesn't always feel like it- until the next day that is! you may be working muscles that haven't previously been aware, so surely you will feel it at first. as your muscles get used to the movements you the pain will go away.

also consider the weight of your hoop. my first hoop was a BodyHoop -she is now named the Beast Ursula :) she's so dern heavy! i bruised pretty badly trying to vertical hand hoop with her. and i still can't. where as with a lighter hoop, i only bruised slightly the first time. as you get more comfortable with hooping in general you might find yourself progressing to lighter/smaller hoops which may help reduce your chances for discomfort.

i am absolutely not of the "no pain, no gain" philosophy but stick with it! i think you'll find hooping be worth it in the long run.
I had althought brusing on my hips but it got better.
When I don't warm up and hoop a lot i can get a pain in the back - so now I try to warm up before.
Ahhhhh....I love the sore muscles! Call me crazy but I have not been in shape for years and the fact that I am getting in better shape through hooping? AWESOME! It is sooo much fun that the fact that it is exercise is such a bonus! I am a bath person and pretty much indulge on days I don't have to was my hair. Certainly helps sore muscles to a degree and helps with overall mood improvement with me...: ) I was trying to vertical hoop one day and overdid it. My thighs were screaming at me the following day...LOL! I hoop to the right but have not experienced any bruising yet of any kind.
I would seriously caution you not to overdo it. If you hurt or bruise, it's important to let these bruises heal before hooping on them again. Listen to your body! It knows what's up. And be sure that you're practicing hooping in both currents to prevent injury. :)

If you haven't already read it, Caroleeena wrote a very helpful article: http://www.hoopcity.ca/profiles/blogs/arnica-for-bruising-and-pain
4 months new to hooping and I've accepted that hooping at the waist or hand can be a little painful after a while. Here is where I'm having trouble - hooping at the chest. I'm learning how to hoop at the chest and find it to be quite painful when the hoop is either coming up or going down across my breasts :S (eek!) Should it be staying at armpit level? Will it always be that painful??

My shoulders, the backs of my hands, my left hipbone...all purple! I was going to take today to give them a break but it was just so nice out. After the first day I actually hooped for 2+ hours, my groin muscles were KILLING me the next day, I think just from all of the baaaack-and-forth movements. Stretching after a hot bath always works for me. The bruises however...

I'm thinking if a body part of mine ever gets really sore, I'll just rest it and practice moves that use only other body parts for a day or two.

Bruises don't bother me, I bruise REALLY easily. So much so that in the summer when clothing is sparse my friends and family all wonder if I'm getting abused. :_; I don't know why it happens.

Since then^^ i've had no trouble with sore muscles though. I must have been doing it wrong the first day.

I think I'll invest in some arnica cream, I'm too impatient for my body.

Haha, you shouldve seen my body the first 2-3 weeks :D bruises everywhere!!! Even on my hand! It sure was painful, but I just kept going (of course with little breaks like a day or two) and after a while I couldnt feel it anymore... and then it was all fine :) So dont worry and just listen to your body! If it tells you that its too much, just stop and wait until it tells you that its fine again... :)
