I don't think I will call it dancing...more like fits of slinging a hoop around, but improving. I am in Kernersville, NC and looking for local jams/classes. There seems to be some in Carrboro, Charlotte, Asheville, etc - but we are mysteriously missing any hoop dance activity. I have found a Hoop Cardio class, but I do not believe that is what I am interested in at this time.

I have several friends that own businesses that could potentially accommodate a group of dancers. Let's get together!!

"fits of slinging a hoop around" .....apt description for me, that's for sure.

Anyway, I know this isn't what your post was about, exactly, but I googled your city to see how far you are from Raleigh ....not too far it doesn't seem...

How about getting one of your friends to let you organize a workshop in their space? Contact Caroleeena in Raleigh to be the presenter. Your "fits" will be much improved by the end of the workshop.

PLUS you'll have a chance to draw in all the nearby hoopers and hoop-wanna-be-ers for a mailing list and formation of a local group.

Caroleeena is a wonderful person and teacher. Being where you are, if you don't know her you should. She's on YouTube (yes, with three 'e's) and I can give you her email if you'd like to contact her about setting up a workshop.

Just a thought. Back to my fits.
Ha! That's so funny, I just spent the weekend with her in Charlotte with the Hoopers down there. She's amazing!! I just love her. I had given that some thought actually. Perhaps it is time to start this moving along?

Maybe you'll join us when I eventually figure it all out!

Break time, to feed the dogs.....

Ah ha, so that's why you're suddenly energized... That's great, glad I didn't bother taking the time to tell you what you'd just missed :p

I'd love to, but it's a two day drive for me. I know because a couple of weeks ago Zena and I were up there for two days of private lessons with her :) ...You're lucky to be so near... But if you move slowly enough, I might be ready for another drive sometime soon.
Well, I do have the exuberance of a new student, don't I?? Ugg, it's so obvious, hahaha.

It will take some time to get all the pieces to fall into place. It just so happens I have some time this week b/c the university I teach at is on Fall Break. I have completely over-posted my fb too :) Come next week, I won't have a second to myself, so all my internet stuff is to be done now. Between my new addiction to hooping and all this typing I may just wear out my fingers.
Fall Break already? ....not to sound like a total curmudgeon, but if Tulane (here in New Orleans) extends it's "breaks" any farther, and you count in recovery time from weekend hangovers, the students will have just about enough time to unpack and get laid a few times before the semester's over. All for only $20,000 of mommy and daddy's dollars.

My only two friends in the world are dogs and their paws are too big to type so I'm safe from FB and Twitter. But if they start one called WoofBook I'm toast.
I know some hoop dancers in Stokesdale. I think that might be near you. If you want I can pm you their fb page so you can try to connect with them if it's near you.
That's right up from me, thanx. I would like that very much. I've scoured FB and not had too much success. Is there a particular way to search it? I am not the most computer savvy gal.
i live in greensboro!
Hey Gerri,

I'm just seeing this now. My friend Kelly Jean is teaching hoopdance in Winston-Salem. I am actually heading there this Friday to perform and help drum up some interest for her locally. And the folks in Stokesdale Poppy was talking about are wonderful hoopers and friends. Neither one of them teaches classes but they will love to jam with you.

If you ever feel like coming down to Carrboro (1 hour-ish drive) Baxter & I teach two weekly beginner Hoop Path classes. Bax teaches on Tuesday evenings, 7:45pm to 9:15pm, and I teach Thursdays from noon to 1:30pm. Kelly has driven from Winston a few times to take our classes--I'm sure she'd be interested in carpooling with you. Pm me if you would like her contact info!
Hi Ann!
I actually met someone you and Baxter know. Her name is Patricia and I met her at Shakori Hills last October. She talked me into trying a hoop and it was on from there!!! I picked up a couple hoops and made some as well, had a blast with them...blew out my back (def. NOT related to hooping) and have been silent around here since. I am just now getting back into strong movement, exercise, etc. My work requires me to be super physical all the time and I am ready to start back hooping as well. This weekend certainly turned into cave time for me, but, I'd love to see you and Kelly Jean some time soon. I have to be away next weekend for a yoga training (I'm a teacher) but, I will be heading back to Carrboro more often. Thank you for the note and I would love some more info on the WS classes as I am in Kernersville.

Love and Light,
Gerri
That's wonderful! Patricia is one of our homies. So glad to hear of the connection! I will send you Kelly's email (W-S) as well as Richard & Rakaiya's (Stokesdale). Look forward to seeing you here in CBO!
Hey Gerri, I'm in Winston Salem & just recently connected with Kelly Jean. I have only taken one hoop workshop and I'm just a beginner but would love to get up with you sometime if you find a place to jam. I'm on facebook as well.

Swizzy Ape

a way out of the hoop

I'm stuck in a loop with the hula hoop. When I was a little girl I was abused in every which way. Often I was grounded to my bedroom, with two bathroom visits and a dinner release. In my bedroom held my boom box. Loud music would draw my angry step father towards my room. But I had to dance, so from a young age I would take a few preventable beatings so I could dance in my bedroom. Pretending I'm dancing on stage with Brain Setzer, I had trained myself to ingore reality while I dance. Even…

for the love of hoopers......

I haven't posted for a very long time, but I have something worth sharing.  In the last couple of years, I have advanced enough to start teaching and I absolutley love my classes.  All my students are wonderful its the most favorite part of my week. Through a very unfortunate series of events, every hoop I own, including my hoops for students, were taken and no longer in my possession. I was so upset ,not for myself, but my students would have nothing to take class with. There…
