Several people have asked me if you need to be a certified instructor to start teaching a hoop class. The answer is: No, but it will help you to succeed and help you teach your students better.

You don't need to be certified to start a class, it will however help you in several ways and also allow you to justify charging for your class. When I first started teaching I didn't charge for my first year of teaching because I was still figuring out the best way to describe the moves and didn't feel right charging students at that point. I was a good teacher but not good at teaching the hoop and actually translating the movements in a way students could understand.

What are some of the benefits to getting your hoop instructor certification?:
* Will help you better understand the tricks and how to explain each body movement.
* Teach you the skills needed to facilitate a group.
* Provide pre-made and workable lesson plans.
* Help you deal with difficult situations in the classroom.
* Provide legal information regarding physical movement.
* Provide tips for running your hoop teaching business, advertising, creating a company, etc. (These types of programs run for thousands in other entrepreneur workshops and weekend events)
* Provide you with a document of certification.
* Allow you to use their trademark and provide their hoops at a wholesale, discounted cost.
* The classes are fun and will challenge your own personal hoop skills.

There are dozens more benefits to getting certification. The important thing to remember is that certification is not about a piece of paper, but rather about getting the resources you need in order to be the best teacher you can be.

hey Sandra - have you done any teacher training or all self taught?

No I have never taken any Hoop teacher training nor have I ever even seen an instructional hooping DVD.

I am completely self taught in both my hooping and my hoop teaching skills.

I do have to point out though that I have a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Fine Arts. I've got almost 4 years of experience teaching hoop dancing to people of all ages. I'm currently running hoop classes in my home city for adults in the evening and also provide hoop dancing workshops in schools during the day for a maximum of 30 students per 1-1/2 hour workshop grades K-12.

So I've dealt with a lot of questions.

What do you do in your school classes? I have been asked in the past to teach dance at schools, but at some point I would love to teach hooping.

Im looking into certification as I love hooping and would like to know how to teach others correctly.

In the UK bodyhoops offers different levels of training as some dates that fits in with time and money! I would love to find out some info from fellow hoopers;

* Has anybody attended a body hoops training session? What do you think?
* Was the progression through the levels worthwhile? from what I have read you do the level 1, then within a year you have to progress to level 2 or pay a fee or show some progress...
* Has the training helped your personal hooping develpoment?

Sorry for all the questions but I would love to get a hoopers opinion before shelling out the course fees!
Thank you x
Hoopnotica has distance teacher training program. Has anyone done this?
Hello! There's some great dialogue on this very subject in the Hoop Teaching Tribe... here's the link, if you want to check it out:

I've been playing with the idea of getting certified.
It's quite pricey though. /:
do you have to be certified to certify others?
meaning, could you certify people sandra ?
i suppose you could with your own way of teaching just like the others do.
you certainly have experience

Thank you.

I have been thinking about offering certification. Maybe next year?

The class would be offered online. Your "Final" would include sending me a video of your hooping and a short description of how you plan to improve the lives of your students by sharing the gift of hooping.

Sounds wonderful! I've already told my boyfriend that if/when you offer certification I'm going to take it. I talked with an art professor who runs her own belly dance studio here in town; I may teach classes there this fall so I wanted to make sure I know all I can get my hands on, which is why I went and signed up for the Blooming class. This way I'll have everything from Beginners to Intermediate to Advanced and the Breaks & Reversals covered by the time I start teaching and I'll feel more confident in my teaching abilities. :-)
I would def take your certification class. I have been making hoops and just started teaching beginners but would like more techniques. Also, a big thanks to your free tutorials on Youtube. You pretty much taught me how to hoop and how to break down a trick to help others:) You've been sooo generous to the entire hooping community and it's truly inspirational.
Thank you!

I LOVE your sentence of "how to break down a trick to help others."

There really is a "formula" for teaching. Thank you for noticing the thought I've put into the the tutorials. ; )

Much love,
