I was just certified in October and have been pretty slack about the situation til recently.  I found a great yoga studio with wonderful floor space; however, the problem lies in the fact that I have to do all the promotion and get all the people into the class on my own in a city where hula hooping or hoop dance is as common as a 10 legged dragon.  Would any one have any suggestions or examples of how they started their class, advertised, or made themselves known to the public... I would love any advice given.  Thank you all

I started out doing a free meetup every other week. perhaps you could do a free demo in the studio and invite all the current students? does your town have a morning show? if they do contact them, I'm sure they would love to have you on. I did that in my town. That being said, I must say it does take alot of time and patience to build a class. I've been teaching since July and am finally getting around 8 people consistently for each class. (I teach twice a week.) All the other instuctors at my studio tell me it just takes time.  Hoop in public as much as possible, and make cards to hand out.

FYI I ordered my cards from this site: http://www.overnightprints.com/  I got the 4X6 double sided glossy postcard.  They have specials and you can get a good deal.  You design it yourself on the website.

keep on keeping on, it takes time and patience. People need to see things a few times before they really see them, I think the best 'exposure' is to carry a hoop everywhere you go, and talk to people when they ask.

I'm surprised to read this -- question: did your certification program include marketing training, sales, client relations and all that? That's standard with the training we do. the short answer is advertise and promote yourself whenever and wherever you can. ;)

Hi,

I have found that hooping in public at local events is a great way to make yourself known.  I don't teach, but wish I did because there is so much interest when I hoop after work at a local concert series on the plaza in the summer months.  Put yourself out there and be a consistent figure.  People will join your class :)

Haha I have the same issue. I'll be watching this thread closely! I do use Facebook to get the word out, though.

How could I have forgotten FaceBook?  I use Facebook a TON.  In face, the primary reason I'm on FaceBook is to promote hoop stuff.

Here's a link to my group: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=113270251483

Have a free trial class.  Put up posters, tell friends, facebook, go into gyms and talk to people, spread the word!  Start a hoop group too where people meet weekly in the summer in the park somewhere
SEO on your web site is also a big help -- at least it was for me when i started the school almost 9 years ago. coming up the first page is key -- i found this out a few years in when others were higher ranked than i was. seo ranking increase absolutely increased my client load.

I would love to thank you all for giving  me such wonderful advice I will take this in very seriously and try my best to put alll these good things to use.

Hey Isa- I had a one day session for level 1 and level 2.  They were very thorough with techniwue and how to help others but there was little to no information on how to market yourself.  I would also like to ask (and this might be a sill y question) what does SEO stand for... not very tech savy lol

ps i know this is a long response.... but I was thinking of putting up a mini you tube tutorial introducing myself, the class and a short lesson on a hoop move.  I would put the address on my fliers that I post around town so if people were interested they could see who would be teaching the class what its about and if they would like it.  Its just an idea ... any oppinion or critiques would be cool for this as well...

thank you again

SEO = search engine optimization. it's what gets your ranking higher on google. :)

and i don't know what level 1 and 2 are...

Level 1 and 2 are the basic fundamentals of hoop dance (one level more advanced then the other)... waist hooping, halos, vortex... simple techniques brokendown to teach others in a class setting for them to use in a creative process :0)
ah, i see. I run my teacher training with the idea of running the business aspect of it as part of the training. i mean, you can't really make money teaching unless you're clear on both parts of the equation: teaching AND running the business of making money. ;)
