Permalink Reply by Kate Morris on May 9, 2011 at 10:19pm Hi! I just started teaching my class a week ago, and I'm having a blast so far!!! My gym, like most of yours, wanted a fitness based hoop class vs. a dance class, so I had to come up with some moves that were more fitness based (although I hope over time, I can incorporate more dance and tricks!). I just came up with a couple of ideas and tried it in class last week.
While in Halo, slowly kneel down and sit on your butt with your legs in front of you. Continue to Halo, and use one hand to support your body. While in Halo, do 16 counts of bicycles with your legs. Recover, and switch hands. Repeat the 16 counts of bicyles. Recover again, and this time Halo in the prayer position with both hands and do 16 more counts of bicycles. I love doing moves like this because usually students are so focused on the hoop, they don't notice how many reps they've done!!!
Also I hand hoop to the side, with the hoop in the vertical plane. While hand hooping, I do a set of lunges. I then turn towards the hoop, grab it to switch directions, then turn and repeat in the opposite direction.
Also I put together a fairly simple routine. It just involves mostly grapevines, some turns, and step touches while waist hooping. The moves are very easy if done by themselves, but when you add the waist hooping, it can be very difficult!!! I tried this in class last week, and one of the students said it was more of a workout than any Zumba routine she's ever done!
I love hearing these ideas, keep them coming!!!!
