Hello!

Sorry if this is a repeat. But, I have been teaching a hoop fitness class and am in need (desperately!) of some more fun ideas.

With regard to exercising with a hoop, does anybody have any suggestions on exercises I can do WITH the hoop (besides walking lunges, plies, super-fast waist hooping, and arm hooping). I especially need help with upper body exercises; the hoop just isn't heavy enough to use for good arm workout.  The class is fitness based, but I do show some basic tricks; however, most of the participants aren't there to learn hoop dancing.

For this same class, any suggestions for fun group games (for adults)? I currently do the pass-a-ball-while-hooping deal, but that's all I've got.

HELP!!  and thanks!  :)

WOW what a great idea. wish my space was made for such an activity
Yep that is what is nice about being at a park district. It is the size of gym in there. We can really get some height when we throw the hoops up. Plus their closet is filled with fun stuff. I brought out the steppers for advanced students which gave them a really great cardio workout. I find my class in a small amount tricks and mostly fitness and lots of coordination. Bad thing... doesnt pay very well. Only get $25 for every class i teach. Students only pay $50 for an 8 week class. So it is nice to be able to offer such an affordable class that really gets hooping out there!
Liz, how did you incorporate the step into your class? I am picturing maybe, just doing a basic step up/down, while waist hooping? My class is just discovering the hoop again, so I wouldn't do that to them for sure, but maybe in the future! Wish I had a full size gym as well, we just have an aerobic room, just enough for 9 hoopers....and me!
I've used the step in an interval class with the hoop.
3 minutes of a step pattern, 30 seconds squat thrusts off the step, 3 minutes hoop, 2 minutes weights.

I change around the step pattern each interval, change the hoop to waist, hips, chest, shoulders (all optional -they can stick with waist hooping), and change the squat thrusts to planks, push ups and dips off the step. The weights get changed around for anything for upper body.
I have been teaching since February and teach about 15 classes a week, all different places. I have actually changed the name of my classes to Cardiohoop, instead of Hoopdance-as per feedback from many students and non-students, apparently Hoopdance is intimidating ("I can't dance, I have no rhythm, I don't like zumba class" etc)

That being said, I've changed the flow of my classes quite a bit since I started teaching, and definitely do a more cardio-based approach. often in classes (as I have many hoopers that started back in February and honestly are probably better than me at this point LOL) we do a circuit-cardio stations of step and bosu ball, and weight stations of bicep curls and tricep presses. doing the weights while waist hooping, for one minute, switching to a cardio station for a minute, then to weights-we do it all over-waist hooping both directions, waist hooping with 2 hoops, waist hooping with light light hoops, hip hooping, sometimes we do passing and halo in the circuit too when i really want to kick their butts :D

for the step, i usually let people do what they want. either a basic up up down down step, they can speed it up, do it fast, or they can do plyos (one foot on the step, one foot off the step, and you jump and switch feet) or side step plyos, same thing just straddling the step instead) which are more advanced and hard. those don't really take up much room, the circuits that is.

Here's some videos i made for visuals. Sorry they are kinda lame LOL I have my Hoop Face on, HA, and loud basketballs in the gym (and my 6yr old videotaping LMAO) but you can get an idea

Hi!  I just started teaching my class a week ago, and I'm having a blast so far!!!  My gym, like most of yours, wanted a fitness based hoop class vs. a dance class, so I had to come up with some moves that were more fitness based (although I hope over time, I can incorporate more dance and tricks!).  I just came up with a couple of ideas and tried it in class last week.

While in Halo, slowly kneel down and sit on your butt with your legs in front of you.  Continue to Halo, and use one hand to support your body.  While in Halo, do 16 counts of bicycles with your legs.  Recover, and switch hands.  Repeat the 16 counts of bicyles.  Recover again, and this time Halo in the prayer position with both hands and do 16 more counts of bicycles.  I love doing moves like this because usually students are so focused on the hoop, they don't notice how many reps they've done!!!

Also I hand hoop to the side, with the hoop in the vertical plane.  While hand hooping, I do a set of lunges.  I then turn towards the hoop, grab it to switch directions, then turn and repeat in the opposite direction.

Also I put together a fairly simple routine.  It just involves mostly grapevines, some turns, and step touches while waist hooping.  The moves are very easy if done by themselves, but when you add the waist hooping, it can be very difficult!!!  I tried this in class last week, and one of the students said it was more of a workout than any Zumba routine she's ever done!

I love hearing these ideas, keep them coming!!!!
